Girls Soccer Breaks Through in Second Half Vs. Salem

The Louisville Leopards shutout the visiting Salem Quakers 2-0 on Senior Night Wednesday at JennCanAdLouisville Leopards Stadium. With the victory, Louisville improves to 9-1-1 overall and keeps pace with West Branch for first place in the NBC with a record of 5-0-1.

Senior Leopards Goalie Celia Keefe recorded 14 saves to earn her 3rd shutout in her 6th start of the season. Neither team scored through the first 66 minutes of action. Both Louisville and Salem had their chances, but neither squad found the back of the net.

The stalemate finally ended when Maddie Berkebile poked home a goal after a scramble in the box. A corner kick by Lindsey Bradley started the play. A shot by Bri Horton was blocked by a Quaker defender, deflected off Kayla Gibson, and then was served on a silver platter for Berkebile. She used her left foot to lace the ball into the back of the net giving the Leopards a 1-0 advantage with 13:59 left to play in the contest.

Gibson scored a goal of her own three minutes later. Hannah Baughman crossed the ball into the box Beatty's White Louisville Leopards Hoodieand it deflected off several Salem players. The ball appeared to nick off Berkebile back toward Gibson who lined it into the right side of the goal .Berkebile was officially credited with the assist on the play.

The Leopards held the Quakers scoreless in the final 11 minutes to earn the victory. With the loss, Salem drops to 11-3-1 overall and 4-2 in the NBC. The Quakers will have a chance to play spoiler in their season finale next Wednesday when the host another first place team in archrival West Branch.

After dropping their inaugural matchup in 2011, Louisville has now defeated Salem in each of the past five seasons. The Leopards are an undefeated 3-0 at home against the Quakers all-time and this is the first time they have shutout Salem. Louisville has now recorded 5 shutouts on the season overall.

Prior to the contest, the Leopards celebrated Senior Night and honored their two Seniors Celia Keefe and Madison Novosel. Leopard Nation would like to personally congratulate these players on a great career and thank them for making the Lady Leopards Soccer program what it is today!

UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next host the GlenOak Golden Eagles in their Kick for the Cure Game on Saturday, October 8. JV will start at 9:00 AM and Varsity will follow at 11:00 AM.
