The Louisville Lady Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball Team downed the visiting Marlington Dukes 55-47 Saturday Afternoon at Louisville High School. With their 15th consecutive victory, Louisville improves to 15-1 overall and stays a perfect 11-0 in the NBC.
Abby Beaver scored a game-high 16 points and recorded a game-high 4 assists to lead the Leopards. Sarah Lairson also finished with a double-double in scoring 15 points and pulling down a game-high 10 boards. Also highlighting the Louisville stat sheet were Grace Jackson with 7 points & 8 rebounds and Emily Hollifield who had a game-high 4 steals.
The Dukes hit 3 of their 6 three-pointers in the opening quarter in taking an early 13-9 lead. However, Danielle Walter and Beaver answered with triples of their own for Louisville helping the Leopards tie the game back up at 15-all.
After Marlington took the lead again, Lairson scored from the key while being fouled with 0.9 seconds remaining in the first quarter. This jump started a 12-0 Leopards run that was full of all out effort on offensive glass. On one possession, Louisville grabbed 5 straight offensive rebounds before Alexa Oberster flushed in a lay-in while being fouled in the process. The Leopards out-rebounded the Dukes 33-22 for the game, which included a 13-3 advantage in offensive boards.
Louisville would take a 33-27 lead into halftime and edge Marlington 22-20 in the second half to win their 13th straight NBC game. The Dukes actually out-shot the Leopards 43% (18 of 41) to 40% (22 of 55) from the field, but Louisville’s offensive rebounding helped create 14 more shot opportunities.
Marlington (8-10, 3-8) was led by Zoey Peck who scored a team-high 11 points and dished out a team-high 3 assists. Morgan Penird and Alyssa Powers also scored 10 points each.
With the victory, the Leopards have now won 5 straight over the Dukes overall and 7 straight at home over Marlington. Louisville now leads the all-time series 64-17, which includes a 30-10 record at LHS.
