The Louisville Leopards Wrestling Team competed at the Eastern Ohio Wrestling League Tournament Friday and Saturday at Austintown Fitch High School. Louisville racked up 274 team points to easily earn their third consecutive EOWL Championship. The South Range Raiders placed second with 235 team points and the host Austintown Fitch Falcons came in third place with 185 team points.

Eight Leopards Wrestlers Place 1st

Eight Louisville Wrestlers finished undefeated for the tournament en rout to taking first place in their respective weight classes. They included senior Lacy Harvey (106), sophomore Kolten Barker (113), junior Dylan Rhoads (126), senior Pablo Castro (132), junior Dominic Hoffarth (138), senior Brenden Severs (157), senior Blake Schaffer (190), and senior Cameron Brazek (285).

Barker, Severs, and Schaffer all recorded 32 team points to lead the Leopards. Barker and Severs won by fall in all four of their bouts. Schaffer pinned his first three opponents before earning back-to-back major decisions in the championship semifinals and finals. Castro, Hoffarth, and Brazek registered 30 team points and 3 pins each for Louisville. Harvey and Rhoads also won by fall twice as well for the Leopards.

Louisville Surges Past South Range in Final Round

Louisville held a slight edge in team points over second place South Range heading into the finals 231-223. The Leopards would claim all three head-to-head first place bouts with Raider wrestlers and would outscore them in team points 44-12 in the final round of action to take their third straight EOWL title.

All three Louisville Vs. South Range first place bouts featured top 10 matchups of ranked wrestlers for their respective divisions. At 106, Harvey (ranked #8 in DII) defeated Raider junior Hunter Newell (ranked #8 in DII) by 9-3 decision. At 132, Castro (ranked #1 in DII) shutout South Range senior Ray Cmil (ranked #4 in DIII) by 5-0 decision. At 157, Severs (ranked #7 in DII) pinned Raider junior Jake Starkey (ranked #10 in DIII) in the second period of the championship bout.

At 190, Schaffer (ranked #1 in DII) also blanked Southeast senior Jaidyn Sapp (ranked #3 in DII) by an 11-0 major decision in a bout between top ranked wrestlers.

Ten Leopards Place at EOWL Tournament

Overall ten Leopard wrestlers placed in the tournament. Others placing included senior Noah Peterson (175) in third place and junior Connor Novosel (120) in sixth place.

Peterson was only undone by undefeated (34-0) Boardman senior Sean O’Horo (ranked #9 in DI) by a 5-1 decision in the championship semifinals. O’Horo would go on to take the 175 title and was also named the EOWL Tournament MVP. Peterson bounced back with back-to-back victories in consolation to claim third.

UP NEXT: The Leopards will next host the Beaver Local Beavers for Senior Night on Wednesday, February 2. Middle School will start at 5:30 PM with JV following at 6:00 PM and Varsity following after that around 7:00 PM.
