Carrollton Spoils First Game in New Gym

Jon Crank Louisville vs. Carrollton 2011

FULL VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

Carrollton 32, Louisville 30

With 1:26 remaining, Stephen Erickson connected on a layup for the only points in the final five minutes of the contest to break a 30-30 tie.  Carrollton held off the Leopards the rest of the way spoiling the first game in the newly renovated gymnasium 32-30.  Jake O’brien was the only Leopards player to score double figures leading the team with 10 points.

The Leopards came flying into the new gym taking a 9-4 lead just 2:35 into the ball game.  This run included the first points of the new gym by Jon Crank, the first three-pointer by Mike Kelly, and then back-to-back jumpers by O’brien.  But a free throw my Jeremy McQuilken would be the only points for Louisville in the remainder of the quarter.  Carrollton crept back to trail by just 2 at the end one.

A transition basket by Alex Schooley late in the second quarter gave Louisville their biggest lead of the evening at 20-14.  They would also match their largest lead early on in the third quarter when O’brien hit a three-pointer from the left corner.

However, the Warriors would stay in the game by hitting multiple three-pointers and shutting down the Leopards on defense.  Jake Peterson scored a third of his 9 points with a long ball late in the second and Andrew Collins hit two triples in the third for Carrollton.  Collins would score 8 of his team-high 10 points in the period to give the Warriors their first lead since the second quarter.  The Warriors limited the Leopards to 0 points for a stretch of 6:28 in the period  However, buckets by Trevor Meredith and Schooley put Louisville up by a single point heading into the fourth.

The first points of the final period came when O’brien hit from downtown at the 5:30 mark.  Erickson answered right back twenty seconds later with a layup that hung on the rim and rolled in for the Warriors to tie the game at 30-30.  Then the drought began.  For three and a half minutes the Leopards could not buy a bucket and Carrollton didn’t even make a shot attempt.  The two very patient squads milked the clock down exchanging possessions four times before Erickson finally broke the tie.

Louisville was still given three breaks before the clock ran out, but they failed to convert on any of them.  Kelly force a jump ball giving the Leopards possession back after they nearly squandered it.  Trevor Hostetler tipped a floating in-bounds pass at mid-court and Schooley recovered the loose ball.  However, he turned the ball over, on a controversial no-call, while driving to the hoop.  After nearly a 20 minute delay for blood cleanup, Erickson missed a 1-and-1 giving the ball back to the Leopards.  But two missed three-pointers in the final 10 seconds blew out the Leps candle of opportunity to win or tie.
