Canton South Wildcats Overtime Fumble Vs. Louisville Leopards 2006

Canton South 27, Louisville 21, OT

Louisville found themselves on the wrong end of a reverse deja vu scenario against visiting Canton South back on September 29, 2006. The previous year the Leopards had rallied from a 21-0 fourth quarter deficit to defeat the Wildcats 27-21. Although their was no dramatic comeback, it was Canton South who was victorious by the identical 27-21 score on a fluke play in overtime.

The unlikely hero was Terrance Evans who picked up Devoe Torrence’s fumble at the 4 yard line and took it in for the Wildcats game-winning score. The touchdown came just three plays after Lonnel Bush intercepted a pass on fourth down to end the Leopards possession.

The two squads managed to combine for just one touchdown in each of the first three quarters. Louisville wasted no time in getting on the board as Quarterback Ben Schmucker scampered 71 yards for the opening score. Schmucker would amass a game-high 179 yards rushing on the night.

Canton South answered back with a touchdown in each of the next two quarters to take a 14-7 Beatty's Sports Hat Adlead heading into the fourth. Matt Trissel hit Devon Torrence for an 81 yard touchdown strike in the second quarter. Then his brother Devoe Torrence scored from a yard out in the third.

After that, Schmucker used his feet again to score from 13 yards away and knot the game at 14-14. But answering back was the Wildcats leading rusher J’Keem Waters who found the endzone via a 39 yard touchdown run. Waters finished with a team-high 98 yards on the ground.

The Leopards looked like a team of destiny again when they scored the game-tying touchdown with 1:10 remaining. Kyle Falk caught a 10 yard touchdown pass from Schmucker to cap off a 10 play, 53 yard drive. Unlike the year before, Louisville Kicker Colin McLinden got his chance and booted through the game-tying extra point to send the game to overtime tied at 21-21.

The Leopards out-gained the Wildcats 376-274 and had more first downs by a 21-10 count. Despite that, it was South that ended their 7-game losing streak against Louisville that night.
