Carter Mickley Louisville Leopards Wrestling Vs. Canfield Cardinals 2019

Louisville 34, Canfield 34

The #5 ranked Louisville Leopards Varsity Wrestling Team hosted the #3 ranked Canfield Cardinals Wednesday Night at Louisville High School in a rematch of the 2018 Regional Championship. The match lived up to the hype as the two teams wrestled to a 34-34 tie at the end of their 14 duels. Louisville won the match on a Criteria H tie-breaker as they improved to 8-0 on the season.

Garrett Lautzenheiser (120), Logan Vanicek (132), Davin Rhoads (138), and Carter Mickley (145) all won by pin to lead the Leopards. Jackson Simpson (126) also earned a major decision for Louisville during a run that wiped away a 24-point deficit.

The Cardinals won the first three duels to take a 15-0 lead. D’Alesio (182) won by fall and Crawford (195) defeated Brent Paulus 4-2 in overtime.

The highly anticipated 220 matchup featuring #1 state ranked Tyler Stein from Canfield and #2 state ranked Blake Robbins from Louisville never happened. With Riley Brendle out of the lineup, Robbins moved up a weight class to earn a hard fought 7-5 decision in the Heavyweight match. Stein won by pin in the 220 matchup and after both bouts concluded the Cardinals led 15-3.

Canfield extended their advantage with pins in the 106 and 113 duels. But Louisville answered back in winning the next 5 matchups in scoring 28 unanswered points to take a 31-27 lead. Lautzenheiser (120) began the string with win by fall and Simpson followed with a major decision (126) to cut the Cardinal lead to 27-13. The Leopards then registered back-to-back-to-back pins by Vanicek (132), Rhoads (138), and Mickley (145) to take their first lead of the contest.

In the next bout, Hull (152) earned a 9-4 decision for Canfield to inch them closer at 31-30. However, Jax Leonard blanked Reinhart with a 4-0 decision to put Louisville ahead 34-0. The Cardinals needed at least a major decision in the final match to tie the team score and they got it from Cutrer (170) to tie the match at 34-all. Louisville won on tie-breaking procedures after that.
