Russo Touchdown Gives Boardman Early Lead
Louisville moved the ball into the red zone on its opening possession. Edgein connected with junior Stephen Hann for 26 yards into Boardman territory before keeping the ball for a 14-yard gain to the Spartan 19. Boardman stiffened from there, stopping a run for no gain and forcing three consecutive incompletions to take over on downs.
The Spartans immediately capitalized with an 81-yard scoring drive. Isaiah Payne found junior Chase Russo for a 36-yard completion down the left side before Khiree Traylor moved the chains with three consecutive 4-yard runs.
Payne went back to Russo for a 34-yard touchdown pass that gave Boardman a 6-0 lead with 4:50 remaining in the first quarter. Hann and junior defensive back Jonathan Greathouse helped stuff the ensuing conversion run to keep the margin at six.
After Louisville’s next possession ended with a punt, junior linebacker Xavier Pollard sacked Payne for a 5-yard loss to help force a three-and-out. Junior Hunter Fetrow’s earlier 48-yard punt and Boardman’s ensuing 21-yard punt gave the Leopards excellent field position at the Spartan 38.
Edgein & Wooten Lead 21-Point Second Quarter
Edgein used his legs to finish Louisville’s first scoring drive. He ran for first downs of 8 and 9 yards, advancing the ball to the Boardman 1 before scoring on a quarterback sneak. Carter Yocum blocked the extra-point attempt, leaving the game tied 6-6 with 6:08 remaining in the second quarter.
The Leopard defense created the game’s first turnover on Boardman’s next possession. Sophomore linebackers Anderson Jones and Jeremy Wooten combined to drop Traylor for a 1-yard loss before a mishandled snap by Payne was recovered by Wooten at the Spartan 27.
Louisville needed only one play to turn the takeaway into the lead. Edgein fired to Wooten near the right sideline, and Wooten weaved through the defense for a 27-yard touchdown reception. Edgein ran in the two-point conversion to put the Leopards ahead 14-6 with 3:34 left in the half.
Wooten finished with two catches for a team-high 58 yards and added 42 yards on four carries, giving him an even 100 yards from scrimmage in addition to his fumble recovery.
Louisville’s defense quickly forced another punt. Junior Tanner Smith penetrated the line and helped clear the way for Pawley to storm into the backfield and tackle Traylor for a 7-yard loss, bringing up 3rd-and-17.
The Leopards then drove 73 yards in seven plays to extend their lead before halftime. Edgein found sophomore Ryker Youngen for 13 yards on 3rd-and-3 and followed with a 30-yard pass to Hann down the left sideline.
Edgein scrambled for 14 yards to the Boardman 9, but a personal foul against Louisville moved the ball back to the 24. On the next play, Edgein dropped back and fired to Youngen in the far-left side of the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown. Youngen added the extra point to give Louisville a 21-6 advantage with 38 seconds remaining in the half.
Leopard Defense Keeps Spartans Grounded
Louisville’s defense continued to control the line of scrimmage after halftime.
Jones dropped a Boardman runner for a short loss on the first play of the third quarter, and Pollard followed with another tackle for loss. After a penalty and a 12-yard Felger completion to Traylor, Boardman faced 4th-and-3. Sophomore linebacker Jayden Haught made the initial hit on Traylor, and sophomore defensive lineman Joey Griffiths finished the stop from behind to force the turnover on downs
Boardman regained possession following a Louisville punt, but Pawley charged into the backfield and forced an intentional-grounding penalty that pushed the Spartans into 2nd-and-28 at their own 2. Boardman eventually punted from deep in its territory.
Jones added Louisville’s third sack later in the second half, dropping Cash Felger for a 4-yard loss. The Leopards finished with three sacks for 15 yards and held the Spartans to less than 2.4 yards per rushing attempt.
Pawley Breaks Loose for Two Third-Quarter Touchdowns
Louisville took control with two Pawley touchdown runs during a frantic 25-second stretch late in the third quarter.
The Leopards began their first scoring drive of the half at the Boardman 46, but a personal foul pushed them back to their own 39. Pawley gained 9 yards before Zain Esmail, Robbie Lochrane, and Ali Moshin combined to drop him for a 3-yard loss.
Facing 3rd-and-19, Edgein completed a 31-yard pass over the middle to Wooten down to the Boardman 24. Pawley took the next snap around the right side and raced 24 yards for a touchdown. Youngen’s extra point extended Louisville’s lead to 28-6 with 1:37 remaining in the third quarter.
Boardman answered only 10 seconds later. Felger launched a pass deep down the right sideline to sophomore Dishawn Robinson, who completed a 65-yard touchdown play to cut the Louisville lead to 28-12.
Pawley delivered another fast response. On Louisville’s next play from scrimmage, he ran left, broke through two arm tackles, cutback right, and sprinted 65 yards to the end zone. The conversion run was stopped at the 1 by Spartan sophomore linebacker Hayden Hoffman, but Pawley’s second touchdown made it 34-12 with 1:12 left in the quarter.
The two long touchdown runs helped Pawley average 13 yards per carry. Edgein finished with 55 yards and a touchdown on eight attempts as Louisville averaged 9.9 yards per rushing attempt.
Felger Leads Final Boardman Scoring Drive
Felger led the Spartans on a 13-play, 65-yard drive that consumed 7:36 deep into the fourth quarter. After Jones’ sack, Felger converted a 4th-and-1 with a 7-yard run to the Louisville 25. Terren Johnson followed with a 14-yard run to the Leopard 11.
Felger later kept the ball on a bootleg to his right and powered into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown, trimming Louisville’s lead to 34-18 with 3:36 remaining.
Fetrow forced a fumble on Johnson during the conversion attempt. Russo recovered the loose ball for Boardman, but Haught met him short of the goal line to preserve the Leopard 16-point advantage.
Wooten opened Louisville’s final possession with a 43-yard run to the Spartan 22. Yocum later dropped him for a 4-yard loss as the sky continued to darken. Following one more Wooten carry, officials stopped the game with 57 seconds remaining because of lightning and the contest was declared final.
Edgein Accounts for 206 Yards and Three Touchdowns
Edgein completed 6 of 18 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns while adding 55 yards and a score on the ground. He accounted for 206 yards of total offense and did not turn the ball over.
Hann caught two passes for 56 yards, while Youngen made two receptions for 37 yards and a touchdown. Pawley and Wooten combined for 159 of Louisville’s 217 rushing yards as the Leopards out-gained the Spartans 368-226 in total offense.
Boardman generated most of its offense through four explosive completions. Payne completed 2 of 3 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Felger went 2-for-2 for 77 yards and a score. Russo led the Spartans with two catches for 70 yards, Robinson added his 65-yard touchdown reception, and Traylor had one catch for 12 yards.
Johnson led Boardman on the ground with 43 yards on nine carries. Felger added 28 yards and a touchdown on nine attempts, while Traylor was held to 15 yards on 12 carries.
