Louisville JV Completes Sweep of Tornadoes in 48-36 Shootout Win – JV Football

The Louisville Leopards JV Football Team piled up 412 yards of offense and defeated the visiting Dover Tornadoes 48-36 Saturday morning at Louisville Leopards Stadium.
Sophomore quarterback Maddux Edgein accounted for 301 yards of offense and five touchdowns, while Stephen Hann caught three touchdown passes and intercepted a pass on defense. Sophomore kicker Ryker Youngen also tied the school record with a 43-yard field goal just before halftime.
Louisville led 14-0 less than five minutes into the game, fell behind 16-14 during the second quarter and regained the lead on its next possession. The Leopards never trailed again as the victory improved their record to 2-1 on the season.

Edgein Accounts for 301 Yards and Five Touchdowns
Edgein powered the Louisville offense both through the air and on the ground. He completed 7 of 15 passes for 167 yards and four touchdowns without throwing an interception. Every one of his seven completions either produced a first down or reached the end zone.
Edgein also led all rushers with 134 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. His 301 yards of total offense accounted for more than 73 percent of Louisville’s 412 yards.
The sophomore delivered touchdown passes of 50, 31, 37 and 2 yards to two different receivers. He also recorded runs of 35, 18, 16, 15, 13 and 11 yards while repeatedly extending drives with his legs.
Hann Helps Leopards Race Out to a 14-0 Lead
Louisville wasted little time taking control. Edgein kept the ball for 16 yards on the second play of the game before launching a deep pass down the left sideline to Hann for a 50-yard touchdown.
Youngen added the extra point to finish the three-play, 65-yard drive and put the Leopards ahead 7-0 only 1:17 into the game.
The Louisville defense immediately gave the ball back to the offense. Junior defensive lineman John Lowery sacked Dover quarterback Cohen Von Kaenel for a 9-yard loss on the Tornadoes’ first snap. Hann intercepted Von Kaenel on the next play at the Dover 45 and returned the ball 41 yards to the Tornado 4.
Karter Pawley took advantage of the short field on the first play of Louisville’s next possession. Sophomores Parker Gomez and Joey Griffiths opened a hole up the middle, and Pawley ran through it for a 4-yard touchdown.
Youngen’s second extra point extended the Louisville advantage to 14-0 with 7:46 remaining in the first quarter.
Von Kaenel Leads Dover Back from Early Deficit
Dover answered with a seven-play, 65-yard touchdown drive. Von Kaenel found Landon Colaner for 12 yards on 3rd-and-9 before connecting with Blake Reveal over the middle for a 33-yard touchdown.
Von Kaenel then found Maverick Miller just inside the front-left pylon for the two-point conversion, cutting Louisville’s lead to 14-8 with 4:26 left in the first quarter.
Louisville threatened on its next possession behind an 11-yard run by Xavier Pollard and a 15-yard keeper by Edgein. Dover stopped Pawley for no gain on 4th-and-1 at the Tornado 23 to regain possession.
The Tornadoes proceeded to march 77 yards in 12 plays. Von Kaenel found Miller for 10 yards and later connected with him down the right sideline for 35 yards to the Louisville 18. Facing 4th-and-1, the pair combined for another 1-yard completion to set up 1st-and-goal.
Von Kaenel went back to Miller on 3rd-and-goal, finding him in the front-right corner of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown. Josh Baumberger ran in the conversion to complete Dover’s comeback and give the Tornadoes a 16-14 lead with 8:18 remaining in the second quarter.
Jones Touchdown Puts Louisville Back in Front
Pawley began Louisville’s response with a 16-yard run around the left side and drew a facemask penalty at the end of the play, moving the ball to the Dover 34.
Edgein connected with Anderson Jones for an 11-yard first down before running into the red zone on the following play. A personal foul after the run pushed the Leopards back to the Dover 31, but Edgein erased the penalty on the very next snap.
The sophomore fired a strike over the top of the defense to Jones for a 31-yard touchdown. Youngen added the extra point to put Louisville back ahead 21-16 with 4:47 remaining before halftime.
Brown Interception in the Endzone Ends Tornado Threat
Dover threatened to answer after Von Kaenel found Noah Mark on a well-blocked bubble screen for 17 yards on 4th-and-1. A short flip to Miller gained another 20 yards, and a Louisville facemask penalty moved the Tornadoes to the Leopard 14.
Von Kaenel looked to the end zone on the next play, but sophomore defensive back Kaleb Brown intercepted the pass and downed it for a touchback with 1:19 remaining in the half.
Youngen Ties School Record with 43-Yard Field Goal
Brown’s interception allowed Louisville to produce one more scoring drive before halftime.
Facing 3rd-and-10, Edgein faked the handoff and broke loose for a 35-yard run to the Dover 45. He then connected with Youngen for 13 yards before a 6-yard Pawley run put the Leopards within field-goal range.
Youngen lined up on the right hash and drove a 43-yard field goal through the uprights with plenty of distance to spare. The kick extended Louisville’s lead to 24-16 with eight seconds remaining in the second quarter.
The 43-yarder tied Jaron Lohmeyer for the longest field goal in Louisville football history. Lohmeyer established the record for the varsity team during a 23-15 victory over Northwest on September 25, 2009.
Youngen finished the game with six points, converting all three of his extra-point attempts in addition to his record-tying field goal.
Dover Pulls Even to Open Second Half
Dover received the second-half kickoff and immediately erased Louisville’s eight-point advantage.
Von Kaenel connected with Colaner for 31 yards to reach the Louisville 39. He went back to Colaner on a curl route later in the drive, and the receiver spun back toward the open middle of the field before racing 26 yards for a touchdown.
A Louisville pass-interference penalty on the conversion attempt moved the ball inside the 2. Baumberger ran it in from there to tie the game at 24-24 with 8:26 remaining in the third quarter.
Back-to-Back Touchdowns Put Leopards in Control
Louisville answered with an eight-play, 65-yard drive that lasted 3:26. Edgein found Youngen near the left sideline for a 23-yard completion across midfield and followed with a pair of physical first-down runs.
Facing 3rd-and-3 from the Dover 11, Edgein faked the handoff and kept the ball to his left. He juked one defender, stiff-armed another and reached the end zone for a highlight-reel 11-yard touchdown.
Louisville elected to go for two, and Edgein found Hann for the conversion to put the Leopards back ahead 32-24 with 5:00 remaining in the third quarter.
Dover threatened to answer after Von Kaenel completed an 18-yard pass to Reveal on 3rd-and-20 and followed with an 8-yard completion on 4th-and-2. The Tornadoes later faced 4th-and-8, but a potential first-down pass was dropped, turning the ball over to Louisville at its own 48.
Pollard moved the chains with a 9-yard run on 3rd-and-4 to reach the Dover 37. On the next play, Edgein rolled left and had time to fire a strike to Hann in the end zone for their second touchdown connection of the game.
Pollard pushed the pile across the goal line for the conversion, completing a four-play, 52-yard drive and extending Louisville’s lead to 40-24 with 26 seconds left in the third quarter.
Colaner Strikes Back Before End of Third Quarter
Dover needed only 20 seconds to respond.
Von Kaenel found Colaner near the right sideline for a leaping 20-yard reception on the first play of the drive. The pair went deep on the next snap, and Colaner plucked the ball out of the air while beating the defender for a 45-yard touchdown.
Brown blew up a bubble screen on the conversion attempt to keep Louisville’s lead at 40-30 heading into the fourth quarter.
Louisville moved the ball early in the final period behind an 18-yard Edgein run and a 15-yard Pawley carry. A shared 10-yard sack by Reveal and Dover’s No. 65, followed by a holding penalty and a false start, eventually forced the Leopards to punt.
Junior Hunter Fetrow flipped the field with a 46-yard punt that pinned the Tornadoes at their own 9.
Hann’s Third Touchdown Catch Seals Louisville Victory
Jones tackled the ball carrier for a 1-yard loss on the first play of Dover’s next possession. The Tornadoes were unable to recover and threw incomplete on 4th-and-3, giving Louisville possession at the Dover 16.
Jayden Haught carried twice for 14 yards to set up 1st-and-goal from the 2. Edgein looked to Hann on the next play, and the receiver elevated above two defenders at the front of the end zone to secure his third touchdown catch of the game.
All three of Hann’s receptions resulted in touchdowns as he finished with 89 yards. He also caught a two-point conversion, intercepted a pass and recorded a pass breakup during an outstanding all-around performance.
Haught ran left for the conversion to give Louisville a three-possession, 48-30 advantage with 3:28 remaining.
Von Kaenel Caps Big Day with Highlight-Reel Touchdown
Dover continued to battle on its final possession. Baumberger moved the chains with a 10-yard run on 3rd-and-10 before Von Kaenel kept the ball for 16 yards to the Louisville 39.
Von Kaenel completed an 11-yard pass to Reveal before Pawley dropped the ball carrier for a loss. Facing 3rd-and-11, Von Kaenel found Miller on a screen for 13 yards to reach the Leopard 16.
On the next play, Von Kaenel escaped a potential sack in the backfield, scrambled to his right, spun away from a tackle and powered through a defender at the goal line for a 16-yard touchdown run.
Sophomore Cam Metzger stopped the ball carrier short on the conversion attempt, keeping Louisville’s advantage at 48-36 with 1:07 remaining. The Leopards ran once and then took a knee to finish the victory.
Von Kaenel completed 24 of 41 passes for 347 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 17 yards and another score. His 364 yards of total offense accounted for more than 92 percent of Dover’s yardage.
Colaner led all receivers with 146 yards and two touchdowns on eight catches. Miller made a game-high 11 receptions for 115 yards and a score, while Reveal added four catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. Mark caught one pass for 17 yards.
Teams Combine for 805 Yards of Offense
Louisville out-gained Dover 412-393 as the teams combined for 805 yards and 11 offensive touchdowns.
The Leopards controlled the ground, out-rushing the Tornadoes 245-46. Dover countered with a 347-167 advantage through the air. Louisville averaged 8.6 yards across 48 offensive plays, while Dover averaged 6.9 yards on 57 snaps.
Pawley finished with 51 yards and a touchdown on nine carries while also recording a tackle for loss on defense. Pollard rushed six times for 41 yards and added a two-point conversion. Haught gained 19 yards on three carries and also ran in a conversion.
Jones caught two passes for 42 yards and a touchdown in addition to his tackle for loss. Youngen made two catches for 36 yards to go with his six kicking points.
Defensively, Lowery recorded Louisville’s 9-yard sack. Brown finished with an interception and two pass breakups, while Hann added an interception and another breakup. The Leopards overcame eight penalties totaling 75 yards to earn the victory.
