A Tale of Two Games for Softball at Hudson
The Louisville Lady Leopards Varsity Softball Team split a double header with the host Hudson Explorers Saturday Afternoon. Louisville blanked Hudson 2-0 in game 1 and fell to the Explorers 13-12 in 11 Innings in game 2. With the split, the Lady Leopards are now 7-3 on the year.
Game 1: Louisville 2, Hudson 0
Sarah Cantley (3-1) pitched a complete game, 2-hit shutout and struckout 2 to lead Louisville. Just like on Friday at Marlington, neither team scored through the first five innings.
The Leopards finally got on the board in the top of the sixth when Rylee Squire’s sacrifice fly brought home Grace Jackson from third. Jackson walked to start the inning, stole second base, and advanced to third via Riley Bobo’s infield single.
Louisville would also add an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Teagan Rice singled to left field scoring Peyton McKeever from second.
This was the 7th all-time meeting between the two teams and the lowest scoring game in the series overall.
Game 2: Hudson 13, Louisville 12, 11 Innings
The Explorers used a 5-run 7th inning to force extra innings tied at 12-12. Martha Masich delivered a walk-off single scoring Eden Janesch in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift Hudson to victory.
Emily Cantley batted 6-for-7 with a double and 4 runs batted in to lead the Lady Leopards. Teagan Rice also went 3-for-5 with a double, 2 RBIs, & 2 runs scored, Grace Jackson drove in 4 runs, Rylee Squire cracked a pair of doubles, and Aliyah English also had 2 hits for Louisville.
Only 7 of the Leopards 13 runs allowed were earned as Louisville was plagued by 6 errors. Altogether, the two teams combined for 30 hits and 10 errors.
The win is the Explorers first over the Leopards since they won 4-1 at the Ohio Invitational on May 6, 2006. Louisville still leads the all-time series 6-2 and had won the previous 6 meetings prior to the loss in game two. The Lady Leopards are also 3-1 in games at Hudson all-time. This was the highest scoring in the series between the teams.
This was Louisville’s longest game in terms of innings played since April 10, 2006 when they fell at North Canton Hoover 1-0 in 12 innings. This is also the highest combined score of any extra inning game that Lady Leopards Softball has competed in.
UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next take on the Austintown Fitch Falcons on Monday, April 18 at 5:00 PM. Varsity will be on the road and JV will be home.
