Louisville Leads at Half, but Can’t Hold Off Hoban Comeback 66-52 – Boys Basketball

The Louisville Leopards Boys Varsity Basketball Team fell victim to a second-half comeback by the host Archbishop Hoban Knights, who took the game 66-52 Tuesday night at Archbishop Hoban High School. With the loss, Louisville drops to 5-4 on the season.

Balcomb, Sanders, & Wilson Score Double Figures for LHS
Cayden Balcomb and Drake Wilson both scored a team-high 12 points to lead the Leopards. Wilson scored 7 points in the opening half, which included an early three-pointer as Louisville took a 17-11 lead at the end of the first. Wilson would also finish with 7 rebounds and 3 assists.
Balcomb was the Leopards’ leading scorer in the first half as Louisville built its largest lead of the game, 31-23, at the break. Balcomb also secured a game-best 8 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.
Brandon Sanders also scored double figures with 11 after going 3-of-4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. He also grabbed 4 rebounds and tallied 2 assists.
Colton Dougherty scored in every quarter, finishing with 8 points, a game-high 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Other Louisville scoring included Colten Norris with 4 points, Luke Boldon with a fourth quarter three-pointer for his only points, and a second quarter basket by Cody Zahler.
Cohen Rogers was held off the board, but still made an impact with 5 rebounds and 2 steals.
Johnson and Caporaletti Lead Hoban Comeback
John Johnson scored 13 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and Arri Caporaletti scored 9 of his 15 points in the third quarter alone to spark Hoban’s comeback. Caporaletti also recorded a game-high 6 steals in the process.
The Knights trailed by eight at the break, but began the second half on a 10-0 run to take the lead. The Leopards answered back to regain the lead at 34-33, but Hoban followed that up with an 11-0 run to take a double-digit 44-34 advantage.
Nico Caporaletti made a pair of three-pointers and finished with 8 points, a game-high 5 assists, and 4 rebounds for the Knights. Brady Lucey also scored all 7 of his points in the final stanza to go along with 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals for Hoban.
The Knights outscored the Leopards 21-5 in the third quarter and 22-16 in the fourth quarter to seal the double-digit win.
Other scorers for Archbishop Hoban included Zak Zellers with 5, Lance Richardson with 4, Owen Hamilton with 3, Manny Camacho and Drew Gaffney with 2 each, and Ben Mazzola with 1.
The win snapped the Knights’ three-game losing streak as they improved to 5-2 on the season.
Louisville Vs. Hoban Boys Basketball Series
Louisville is now 1-4 all-time against Archbishop Hoban, dating back to their first meeting in the 1998 sectional tournament. The Leopards’ lone victory in the series came in a 79-51 win over the Knights during the 2023-24 season. This was Louisville’s first trip to Akron in the series.
