Leopards 7th Inning Rally Falls Short
Senior catcher Kaedin Gotshall batted 2-for-3 and scored the Leopards only run of the contest in the bottom of the seventh. Gotshall singled to start the frame and advanced to second via senior pitcher Tyler Jackson‘s ground out to the catcher. Gotshall then advanced to third on a passed ball and came home via sophomore centerfielder Charlie Roberts RBI groundout to first base to chop the Quaker lead in half at 2-1.
Junior third baseman Caleb Miller and junior right fielder Zack Seaman followed with back-to-back 2 out singles to put the game-tying run into scoring position. However, New Philadelphia pitcher Logan Wallace was able to get the next batter to ground out to end the threat and the game.
Wallace and Jackson Lock Into Pitchers’ Duel
Wallace pitched a complete game allowing just that lone run on 4 hits while striking out 4 to earn the victory. He retired the first 6 Louisville batters he faced to begin the game and didn’t allow a Leopard hit unto Gotshall singled on a line drive to left field with 2 outs in the fourth inning.
Jackson started on the hill for Louisville and pitched 6 strong innings, gave up just 1 earned run on 3 hits and struck out 6 in a valiant losing effort. He retired the side in order in the third, fifth, and sixth innings before giving way to senior reliever Tony Brahler in the seventh. Jackson now holds a 2-4 record on the mound for the Leopards this season.
Quakers Scratch Out a Pair of Runs
Two of the Quakers 3 hits in the game came in the top of the fourth. Third baseman Brenton Billman and designated hitter Gage Brown hit back-to-back singles that put runners on the corners with 1 out. Right fielder Connor Shimek swung and missed at strike three in the next at-bat, but the pitch was dropped. While Shimek drew the throw down to first base on the dropped third strike, Billman scored from third enabling the Quakers to take a 1-0 lead.
New Philadelphia tacked on to their lead in the top of the seventh via three consecutive Louisville errors. With 1 out, Shimek reached base via an error and advanced to second on the same play. First baseman Mason Ricklic followed and also reached via an infield error allowing Shimek to advance to third. Finally, second baseman Drew Dummermuth followed with a bunt and was able to obtain first via another Louisville error. Shimek scored from third on the play to put the Quakers in front 2-0. That insurance run would prove to be the difference in the outcome of the contest.
