Louisville 11, Canton South 2

Shelby Swigert went 2-for-2 with a two-run single, two-run triple, and a run to lead Louisville past Canton South 11-2 at the Diamond of Dreams Friday.  Lady Leopards Seniors Carlee Baumgardner, Brittany Flanigan, and Emily Isla were honored before the game that saw Louisville win their 24th game of the season tying last year’s school record.

Swigert’s first big hit capped off a three-run first inning for Louisville.  Annie Woolf drove in Isla for the first run of the game and Katie Cozy & Chandler Rice came home via Swigert’s single to make it 3-0 Lady Leps.

Flanigan started the contest in the circle and retired 9 of the 10 batters she faced in the three innings Beatty's Sports Spring Sports Logos Softballthat she pitched.  She also struck out 4 of those batters and surrendered just one hit.  Gianna Falcone took over for Flanigan in the fourth inning and allowed two runs, but she was lights out after that.  Falcone retired the side in the fifth and did not allow any Canton South player to reach second base during the final three innings.

Louisville’s big inning came when they poured five runs on the board in the third.  Isla singled to begin the frame and then Cozy doubled her home.  Rice then singled home Cozy, before Woolf’s single advanced Rice to third.  After a throw down to try to catch the elusive Rice at third, Woolf advanced to second setting up another big hit by Swigert.  She screamed a grounder that tip-toed the right field line and into the corner.  Rice and Woolf scored easily and Swigert landed on third with a stand-up triple.  She then crossed the plate when Monnot reached base on an error by the second baseman to make it 8-0 Louisville.

The Lady Leopards added in three more runs before officially putting away the Wildcats in seven innings.  Brooke Cox singled home Kylie Zifer in the fourth, Baumgardner and Flanigan slammed back-to-back doubles in the fifth, and Falcone and Monnot copied that feat by doubling on consecutive at-bats in the sixth.

The 11-2 victory improves the Lady Leopards to 24-3, 13-0 on the season.  They will travel to Marlington tomorrow at 11:00 AM to play the final game of the regular season.  Louisville will not only have a chance to break the school records for wins in a season (24-2 in 2011), but they will also have a chance to go 14-0 in the league for the second time in three seasons.
