The Louisville Leopards Boys Varsity Basketball Team thrashed the visiting Youngstown East Golden Bears 91-61 Friday Night at Louisville High School. With their third straight victory, Louisville improve to 10-4 on the year.

Jared Mathie set a school record dishing out 11 assists to fuel the Leopards offense. The previous Louisville single game assists high mark was held by three different players: Kyle Radclife (1995-96), Mike Tournoux (1998-99), and Owen Gramoy (2010-11). Although Mathie didn’t score, 10 different LHS players tallied points in the scorebook which was in large part due to his unselfish passing clinic.

Five different Leopards scored double digits before the start of the fourth quarter. Cam King made 4 three-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points all in the first three quarters of play. Spencer Hall and Colton Jones both poured in 14 points each. Scott Gronow also scored 12 and Bryce Zuppe added 11 for Louisville.

On the ensuing possession Jones hit a three-pointer and Louisville was off and running out to a 5-0 lead. By the end of the first quarter the Leopards were on pace to hit the century mark leading 25-8.

Comfortably ahead, Louisville rested a lot of starters in the second quarter and the paced slowed. Time stood still after a hard foul led to two technical fouls and 6 straight dead ball free throw shots. Halftime couldn’t come quick enough but when it did the Leopards held a 41-24 margin over the guest Golden Bears.

Louisville put the game away in the third quarter that saw them outscore Youngstown East 33-13. The Leopards made 13 field goals in the third stanza including 4 from beyond the arch. Zuppe scored 10 of his 11 points in the third period alone as LHS took a commanding 74-37 lead in the fourth quarter.

Despite the differential the points kept coming as the Golden Bears dropped in 24 points and the Leopards 17 points in the final eight minutes. Gabe Green led Youngstown East by scoring all of his team-high 13 points in the fourth quarter. Deland Richardson also scored 12 and Mar’Quel Anderson added 11.

Snow was forecasted for the weekend, but the two teams made it rain Friday night. When the final buzzer sounded each team had hit 9 three-pointers for the game and Louisville registered their first 90+ point game since a 91-78 home victory agains the Marlington Dukes on January 16, 2015.

This was the first game between the two schools in boys basketball since Youngstown East defeated visiting Louisville 61-46 on February 20, 1951. This was fourth meeting between the two programs dating back to their first ever matchup when the Golden Bears won a tournament game against the Louisville Blue Raiders 46-36 on March 3, 1945. LHS is now 1-3 against East all-time.
