Louisville 38, West Branch 12

It wasn’t supposed to be like this, it wasn’t supposed to happen this way. However, it did and on October 30, 1992 the undefeated #3 state-ranked Louisville Leopards poured it on the unbeaten #2 ranked visiting West Branch Warriors to the tune of a 31-0 halftime lead. Louisville went on to win the game 38-12, take control of the NBC, and improve to 9-0 on the season.

“Everything was working tonight,” Runningback Brian Beatty said following he contest. “I’ve probably never been more pumped up for a game, but I didn’t think we’d win like we did.”

Quarterback Jon Aljancic stole the show in accounting for 297 yards of total offense. He rushed the ball 9 times for 88 yards and was 7 of 16 passing for 209 yards. Aljancic scored on a 12 yard second quarter run, ran in the two-point conversion, and then recovered his second fumble of the game on West Branch’s first play from scrimmage after the ensuing kickoff.

“He’s a player,” Louisville Head Coach Rick Crislip said about Aljancic. “Not only does he do it offensively, but he’ll hit you hard on defense. Jon’s defensive play gets overlooked a lot of times.

After the fumble recovered Beatty scored his second touchdown of the contest four plays later. In fact, Louisville scored 4 times in a 7 minute span late in the first half.

Next Aljancic showed off his arm with a 53 yard bomb to Bob Burick. Burick finished the evening with 4 catches for 131 yards. Then Aljancic showed off his leg with a 35 yard field goal just before half to put Louisville up 31-0. “We were kind of in shock at halftime when we were up that many points,” said Aljancic about their success against the #2 Ranked Warriors squad.

Beatty scored his third touchdown of the contest in the fourth quarter and finished with 98 yards for the game.

West Branch would go on to score two touchdowns in the second half, but the damage had already been done. The crowd of 7,000 at Louisville Stadium saw the Leopards move to 9-0 overall and 5-0 in the NBC with a 38-12 convincing victory.
