Wertz Named New Louisville Leopards Boys Basketball Head Coach

Louisville City Schools has named JV Head Coach Dave Wertz next varsity head coach of the Louisville Leopards Boys Basketball Team. Louisville JV went 24-11 over the past two seasons under the direction of Wertz, which included a 15-2 mark this past season.
Wertz also went 12-8 as the Louisville Freshman coach in the 2022-23 season in which the Leopards finished as runner-ups at the Massillon Freshman Tournament falling only to St. Ignatius 38-17. Louisville JV defeated St. Ignatius 60-51 this past season to flip that script. The players he coached on his freshman squad will be seniors for his first season as varsity head coach.
Louisville City Schools Official Press Release
Louisville City Schools is excited to announce the recommendation of David Wertz as the next Head Coach of the Louisville High School Boys Basketball Program. The official recommendation will go before the Board of Education in June 2025.
A 2018 graduate of Perry High School and Kent State University alum, Wertz brings both energy and experience to the program. He has spent the last three years as a dedicated coach within the Louisville basketball program, serving as both the freshman and junior varsity coach. His JV squad finished this past season with an impressive 15-2 record, and the core of that team will now be seniors under his leadership as he steps into the varsity role.
Basketball runs deep in Wertz’s roots—he got his start coaching under the guidance of his father, Jim Wertz, while attending Kent State. That experience, combined with his time in Louisville, has prepared him well for this next chapter.
“Coach Wertz has been an integral part of our program and knows what it takes to compete at the highest level in the state,” said Louisville Athletic Director Terrie Horn. “He has a unique ability to earn respect while setting a standard of excellence. His teams play with intensity, discipline, and heart—especially on defense, where his philosophy that defense leads to offense has energized Leopard Nation. His offensive vision brings a fresh blend of tradition and innovation that will continue to excite our fans.”
“I’m incredibly honored and excited to lead the Louisville Boys Basketball program,” said Wertz. “It’s a privilege to continue working with this group of student-athletes and to be part of a community that values hard work, tradition, and excellence. I look forward to building on our success and helping our players grow both on and off the court—all while continuing my role as an educator at Louisville Middle School.”
The district is confident in Coach Wertz’s leadership and proud to have one of its own step into this important role.
“Louisville Boys Basketball is riding high, and under Coach Wertz, the future looks brighter than ever,” said Superintendent Michele Shaffer. “We look forward to what’s ahead.”
Please join us in congratulating Coach David Wertz, the new head coach of Leopard Boys Basketball.
