The Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball Team fell to the visiting Warren JFK Eagles 53-47 Monday night at Louisville High School. With the loss, Louisville drops to 1-5 on the season.
Baker Pours in Team-High 18 to Lead Leopards
Maggie Baker scored a team-high 18 points, had a team-best 5 steals, and delivered 4 assists to lead the Lady Leopards. Baker scored on a pair of fast-break layups to start the game and ended her evening by popping her second three-pointer to get Louisville to within 50-47 with 1:25 remaining.
The play was set up by a turnover forced by Mikayla Salmons at mid-court. As a Warren JFK player attempted to pass the ball from the ground, Salmons dove in to take the ball away and in the process, jarred it free into the hands of Louisville’s Mabel Kiko. She passed to Ella Tillett, who found Baker on the right wing for three.
Tillett Scores 10 and Registers 6 Blocks
Tillett scored in every quarter and reached double figures with 10 points. Tillett also registered 6 blocks, one shy of her record of 7 set last year at Austintown Fitch. She also secured 3 rebounds and tallied 2 assists.
While Tillett led the defense inside, the Leopards finished with 13 steals as a team. Salmons finished with 4 steals to go along with 3 assists. Kiko had the most well-rounded stat line of the night with 9 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals, and a block. Bailey Cole also recorded a steal to go along with 2 points.
The Leopards trailed by as many as eight in the opening period before Salmons hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 19-14 at the end of the first quarter. The Eagles began the second quarter on a 10-0 run to take their largest lead of the contest at 29-14. Back-to-back buckets by Baker off assists from Kiko, followed by a Baker to Tillett backdoor basket shrank the margin to 29-21 at the half.
Louisville chipped away in the second half, getting within two points twice on Baker baskets. Cole provided the assist on the second basket that cut the disadvantage to 33-31. Warren JFK answered with a 7-0 run to go ahead 40-33. Kiko scored through contact and then completed a traditional three-point play from the stripe. Kloey Rukavina then scored on a putback to trim the deficit to 40-36.
Louisville and Warren JFK battled back and forth to open the fourth quarter. The Eagles went ahead 45-36, before the Leopards scored 6 straight points in the paint to get within 45-42. Tillett scored on consecutive lay-ins off feeds from Baker and Tanner. Then Salmons found Kiko in the center of the key for two more with just five minutes left in the contest.
Pompelia Scores Game-High 26 to Lead Eagles
Gianna Pompelia set the tone early scoring 12 of her game-high 26 points in the opening quarter to lead Warren JFK. She finished with 17 in the first half and proved to be a menace to the Leopards all night long scoring in every quarter, hitting a pair of three-pointers, and going a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw stripe. Pompelia also notched a double-double, pulling down 11 boards, recording a team-best 4 steals, and dishing out 2 assists.
Laney Condoleon hit 2 three-pointers and broke double figures with 12 points to go along with 5 rebounds. Didi Ryan scored 6 points and had a team-high 4 assists. She also registered a team-leading 8 deflections on defense to go along with a block and a steal. Hannah Myers led Warren JFK with 2 blocks, had 7 deflections, 2 steals, and also tacked on 5 points. Clare Phillips rounded out the Eagles’ scoring with 4 points to go along with 3 rebounds.
After the Leopards cut it to 45-42, Phillips scored on the other end off an inbound to put Warren JFK up five. On the Eagles’ next possession, Pompelia broke free off a screen and popped a three-pointer from the top of the key to increase the Warren JFK lead to 50-42 with 3:43 remaining. Louisville battled back to within 50-47, but Pompelia made a pair of bonus free throws with 1:13 left and Ryan split another pair of bonus attempts with 16.3 seconds left to put the game on ice.
This was the first-ever meeting between Louisville and Warren JFK in girls basketball. The Eagles are the 90th unique opponent the Lady Leopards have faced all-time and the first of four never-before-faced opponents on the schedule this season (Brunswick, Cloverleaf, Struthers).
UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next travel to take on the Youngstown Ursuline Fighting Irish on Saturday, December 13. JV will begin at 1:00 PM and Varsity will follow at 2:30 PM from Ursuline High School.
