The Louisville Leopards Boys Varsity Basketball Team fell to the visiting Cleveland St. Ignatius Wildcats 60-55 Friday Night at Louisville High School. The loss snaps the Leopards 4-game winning streak as they drop to 11-5 on the season and 7-2 at home.
Cam King made 2 three-pointers and scored all of his team-high 11 points in the first half to lead Louisville. Colton Jones, Jared Mathie, Jimmy Wright, and Bryce Zuppe all contributed 9 points each to the Leopards balanced attack. Spencer Hall scored the remaining 8 LHS points which included hitting home a three from the right corner to cut the deficit to 56-52 with 25.1 seconds remaining.
However, the Wildcats Lukas Bielek and Connor Cmiel each hit a pair of free throws in the final 19.4 seconds of the contest to ice the game for Iggy. Bielek poured in a game-high 20 to lead St. Ignatius and Chase Toppin also ended the evening in double digits with 12. Cmiel and Henry Raynor also tacked on 9 a piece for the Wildcats.
The two teams see-sawed in the first two quarters as St. Ignatius led 18-17 after eight minutes and 29-26 at the half. The Wildcats took command of the game by winning he third quarter 17-10 to take a double digits 46-36 lead into the final stanza.
The Leopards remained scrappy and fought their way back into the game in the final stretch. Jared Mathie and Jimmy Wright each made a pair of triples as Louisville made 5 of their 12 three-pointers for the game during the fourth quarter.
Mathie hit an NBA range three-pointer to trim the Ignatius advantage to 53-46 with 80 ticks left on the clock. He then retrieved a loose ball after Hall poked it away from the Wildcat rebounder. Mathie dribbled to the left corner and buried a three-ball to make it 56-49. Immediately after he took an elbow to the face drawing an offensive foul to give possession back to the Leopards. Inbounding from the far left, Mathie went cross court to Hall in the corner. He buried the open shot and Louisville only trailed 56-52 with 25.1 seconds left. That was the closest LHS would get.
This is the second all-time meeting between the Leopards and Wildcats throughout their history. Louisville rallied from a 16-point second half deficit to stun St. Ignatius 67-65 in the Alliance Christmas Classic at Mount Union in their first meeting on December 23, 2015.
