Shea’s Walk-Off Single Lifts Louisville Past Minerva in Wild 7th Inning
Video Highlights
Louisville 6, Minerva 5
Zach Shea blooped a single into right field bringing home Joe Crank to give Louisville a 6-5 come from behind victory against visiting Minerva Thursday. With the victory, the Leopards are now 2-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
The lead changed hands five times during this see-saw affair. Stephen Kerzan, who finished 2-for-3 for Louisville, singled home Jordan Hughes to open the scoring in the first inning. The Lions took the lead in the top of the third by virtue of Alex Gould’s 2-run double.
The Leopards knotted the game in the bottom half of the inning as Alex Hollifield drove in Corey Hileman. Hollifield would later triple in the sixth inning before being tagged out at the plate. The Inside-The-Park Home Run would have been the second of his career, the first came against Salem in 2012. Hollifield also finished with 2 hits for the game.
The fourth inning saw Louisville retake the lead when Jake Adams singled home Crank. The Leopards went up 4-2 in the fifth inning when Garrett Yoder sacrificed home Kerzan who led off the inning with a triple.
The score remained the same until the wild seventh inning. Minerva scored three runs in the top half of the inning to stun Louisville and take a 5-4 advantage. Tyler Stewart delivered a 2-run single to right and Jansten Locke also hit an RBI single to center. Stewart finished the game with 3 hits to lead the Lions.
With the heart of the lineup due up for the Leopards, the game was far from over. Kerzan walked to start the last of the seventh. Then Yoder reached on an error to put runners on second and third with no outs. Next, a bunt attempt resulted in Kerzan being tagged out at the plate and left runners on the corners.
With Louisville still trailing by a run, Adams grounded to second into what looked to be a potential game-ending double play. However, the throw to second was wide allowing Yoder to score the tying run and leaving both Crank & Adams in scoring position. After that Shea provided the game-winner.
On the mound, Adams worked the first four innings and struck out 5. Hughes worked the final three innings to pick up the decision.
With the victory, Louisville has now taken 25 out of the last 27 games from Minerva including the last 14 overall. The Leopards have also won 13 consecutive games against the Lions at home.
UP NEXT: The Leopards will next take on the North Canton Hoover Vikings on Monday, April 14 at 5:00 PM. Varsity will be home and JV & Freshman will be on the road.
