Several Leopards Swimmers Advance to Districts After Strong Sectional
The Louisville Leopards Swim Teams will be sending four individuals and four different relay teams to the District Meet held at Cleveland State University this Friday and Saturday. As a team, the Boys finished 12th out of 22 teams at the DII Akron Sectional and the Girls placed 8th out of 15 teams at the DI Canton Sectional this past weekend.
Boys DII Akron Sectional – 73 (12th Out of 22)
The Boys were led individually by Nick Wertz who won the 500 Freestyle with a stunning time of 4:57.28. He finished just 3.23 seconds behind the DII Akron Sectional Record set by Copley’s Cesar Iturriaga back in 2009. Wertz also placed 2nd in the 200 IM race. Both times allowed him to qualify for the District Meet. Comparing his times against the whole District, he took 7th in the 500 Freestyle and 8th in the 200 IM.
Wertz was also part of the 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relay teams that took 9th at Sectionals and 15th throughout the District. Also members of those District qualifying teams were Joe Casto, Michael Dubrunick, and Travis Cole.
Girls DI Canton Sectional – 121 (8th Out of 15)
Caroline Ehlers and Allison Richmond both punched their ticket to Districts in two individual events this past weekend. Richmond captured first place in the 200 Freestyle finishing with a time of 1:59.80. Her pace fell just 7.21 seconds behind the Sectional record set by Canton McKinley’s Beth Rogers in 2009. She placed 4th in the entire District for the 200 Freestyle. Richmond also took fifth in the 500 Freestyle, which was good enough for 10th throughout the District.
Ehlers took 4th in the 50 Freestyle and 7th in the 100 Freestyle. Her time placed her 13th out of 40 District Qualifiers in the 50 Freestyle and 22nd out of 24 District Qualifiers in the 100 Freestyle. Marlena Evans also made the final cut into Districts by placing 39th out of 40 possible qualifiers in the 100 Breaststroke. She took 15th in the event at the Sectional Meet.
The 200 Yard Medley Relay team consisting of Richmond, Evans, Ehlers, and Alaina Hartley was the final team to qualify for Cleveland by placing 20th in the District and 7th at Sectionals. The 400 Yard Freestyle Relay team of Ehlers, Ashley Grove, Hartley, and Richmond also advanced by taking 16th in the District and 7th at the Sectional Meet this past weekend.
