Louisville Leopards Light Blue Hoodie Established 1924 - Beatty's Sports Fall 2017The Louisville Leopards fell to the visiting Salem Quakers 43-35 Friday Night at Louisville Leopards Stadium. With the loss, Louisville falls to 4-5 overall and drops to 4-2 in the NBC.

Max Hartline carried the ball 20 times for 206 yards and scored 3 touchdowns on the ground to lead the Leopards offense. He scored from 3, 3, and 4 yards away. Hartline also had two huge second half returns that setup Louisville scoring drives. He returned a punt 56 yards to the Quaker 6 in the third quarter and later returned a kickoff 57 yards to the Salem 40 in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Colton Jones completed 12 of 20 passes for 165 yards through the air and also scored from 3 yards out on the ground. His top target was Bryce Zuppe who gained 77 yards on 4 receptions. Runningback Nathan Guiley also ran in a touchdown in the fourth quarter for Louisville.

Grove Appliance Alliance Ohio AdQuarterback Mitch Davidson completed 12 of 23 passes for 229 yards, threw a pair of touchdowns, and ran for another score to lead the Quakers. Wide Receiver Chase Ackerman was his top target making 5 grabs for 101 yards which included a 38 yard touchdown catch. Turner Johnson made the other touchdown catch for Salem.

The Quakers rushing attack was led by Cade Campolito who broke the century mark with 22 carries for 101 yards. Campolito scored the opening touchdown from 5 yards out and Zach Bezon also ran in a score from 9 yards away.

Crislip, DeJacimo, Wyss for Louisville Board of EducationSalem Kicker Brayden Gibson proved to be a key factor in the contest as he booted through all three of his field goal attempts. He hit from 28 and 27 yards out in the second quarter and also made a 25 yarder to put Salem ahead 43-28 with 4:31 left to play. Gibson also converted 4 of his 5 extra point kicks to finish with 13 points altogether.

The difference in the game came on third down. The Quakers were hard to keep off the field in converting 10 of 15 third downs for the contest. The Leopards finished only 2 of 6 on third down for the game. Salem also moved the sticks on both of their fourth down conversion attempts. The Quakers totaled more first downs than Louisville by the count of 20-13.

There were three turnovers in the game, with two coming on back-to-back possessions late in the third quarter. A short Leopards pass to the right was ruled a lateral and Bezon snagged it at the Louisville 30. Just two plays later, Dillon Rebuck stripped the Salem ball carrier and Zuppe alertly pounced on the loose ball to give the Leopards hope heading into the fourth quarter. Bezon also had a interception for the other Quakers takeaway.

The loss snaps the Leopards string of 8 straight wins over the Quakers. This is Salem’s first win over LHS since they defeated the then Louisville Blue Raiders 34-13 on September 22, 1928. The Leopards still lead the all-time series 9-3, which includes a 5-1 mark at Louisville. The loss also snaps the Leopards 16-game home winning streak against NBC opponents.

UP NEXT: The Leopards will next travel to Canton South to take on the Wildcats on Friday, October 27. Game time is set for 7:00 PM from Clyde Brechbuhler Stadium.
