Red Riders Gallup Over Leopards in Scrimmage

Orrville 20, Louisville 7

The Orrville Red Riders defeated the Louisville Leopards in a one half scrimmage 20-7 Friday night at Red Rider Stadium.

The Division IV state semifinalists from a year ago dominated the scrimmage scoring three times on big plays to take a 20-0 advantage.

The Leopards lone score came with just 33 seconds left in the scrimmage when quarterback Joey Duckworth found a wide open Trent Ohman who sprinted into the endzone for a 67-yard touchdown strike.  Ohman finished the contest leading Louisville with seven catches.

Orrville’s first touchdown came on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Lichti to Drew Brenner.  An interception by Brenner and a 29-yard reception by Stewart Turner set up the score for the Red Riders.

Louisville then failed to score on their next possession, but got a break when linebacker Mike Weiss recovered a fumble deep into Orrville territory.  However, a 37-yard field went wide right keeping the Leopards off the scoreboard.

The Red Riders struck again in the second quarter on a 44-yard touchdown strike from Lichti to Cody Weaver.  The extra point snap was bobbled and the Orrville kicker didn’t make an attempt so the score stayed 13-0.

Louisville clamped down on defense during Orrville’s next possession getting back-to-back Sacks to force a 3rd-and-33 play that fell incomplete.

The Leopards drove into Orrville territory on the ensuing possession, but failed to convert on a 4th-and-3 play turning the ball back over to the Red Riders.

The Red Riders final touchdown came on a 34-yard run by Joel Zook with just 1:25 remaining in the second and final quarter.  A pass interference call aided Orrville on the drive.

JV RESULT: Louisville 2, Orrville 0

NEXT UP: The Leps will open the season at home against the Walsh Jesuit Warriors on Friday, August 26 at 7:30 PM.

EDITOR’S NOTE:

I just want to say how great the Red Riders fans were tonight.  The parking attendant was very kind to everyone and even asked me how I was doing.  The folks running the concession stand were very friendly and respectful as well.  It was a great atmosphere and I’d like to wish them luck for the remainder of the season.  Also be sure to check out Tim Snyder’s Red Riders blog, which is similiar to my own Leopard Nation site for Orrville sports.
