The Louisville Leopards Freshman Football Team fell in a shootout to the visiting Orrville Red Riders in their season finale Wednesday Evening at Louisville Leopards Stadium. With the loss, the Louisville Freshman finish the season 5-2.

Zahler Accounts for 5 Touchdowns to Lead Leopards

Quarterback Cody Zahler accounted for 5 total touchdowns to lead the Leopard offense. He ran for a 10 yard touchdown in the second quarter and also ran the ball in from a yard out to put Louisville ahead 50-36 with 33 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Zahler threw 3 touchdown passes as well. The first was to Logan Galbraith from 15 yards away to opening up the scoring on what would turn out to be a 102-point affair. A low snap forced Drake Wilson to roll out to his right and find Logan Klimes in the endzone for an unplanned two-point conversion that made it 8-0 Louisville.


Baker Scores Thrice for Louisville in 1st Half

On their first defensive possession, Baker along with Issac Johnson stopped the Red Rider ball carrier short on 4th-and-4 giving the Leopards the ball back on the Orrville 38.

Louisville then faced their own 4th-and-4, but enticed the Orrville defense to jump giving them a first down the easy way. On the next play, Zahler hit Baker down the right sideline and Baker laid out a would be tackler on his way to a 17 yard gain to setup 1st-and-goal. On 2nd-and-goal, Zahler rolled to his left and then threw back to the center of the endzone hitting Baker for a 7 yard score. The snap snap was good on the point after and kicker Parker Daum split the uprights to up the Leopard lead to 15-0.

On 1st-and-goal inside the 1, Baker took the direct snap and ran right for the easy touchdown run behind blocks from Hunter Fetrow, Johnson, and Cooper Lykins. Daum’s extra point kick was good making it 22-8 Louisville with 8:38 remaining in the second quarter.

Baker and Zahler hooked up again for a 41 yard completion on the next drive that setup another goal-to-go. Zahler would score two plays later on a play action sweep to the left behind a block from Wilson.

Wilson setup the next Leopard scoring drive with a 30 yard interception return back to the Orrville 30. Zahler hit Baker for a 23 yard completion and then again on the next play for a 7 yard touchdown reception. The score put Louisville ahead 36-24 with 1:15 left before half.

Berdella Returns Pick Six to Start 2nd Half

The Red Riders scored with just 10 seconds left before halftime to cut the lead to 36-30 at the break. Orrville got the ball first in the second half looking to go down and take their first lead of the game. However, Xavier Berdella had other plans as he stepped in front of a pass an took it 40 yards to the house for a pick six. Daum’s extra point was true again making the score 43-30 in favor of the Leopards just 11 seconds into the second half.

Despite being down two scores, Orrville mounted a late rally. The Red Riders cut into the lead with a 13-yard touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion with just over five minutes remaining, making the score 50-44. Their defense then came up with a key stop, giving the ball back to their offense.

With time winding down, Orrville’s quarterback, Mark Lorson, delivered a clutch 19-yard touchdown pass to Aiden Shoup, tying the game at 50-50. Mark Lorson then converted the 2-point conversion on a run, giving the Red Riders a 52-50 lead with just 15 seconds remaining.

Louisville had one last chance to win the game. Zahler scrambled for a first down to the Orrville 46-yard line, setting the Leopards up for a potential game-winning Hail Mary. However, with only one second left on the clock, Louisville was unable to get the final play off before time expired, sealing the 52-50 victory for Orrville.
