Five Quakers scored double digits as host New Philadelphia hit two key pairs of free throws down the stretch to sink Louisville in double overtime 70-67.  Jake O’brien scored a season-high 28 points for the Leopards, while Mike Kelly  poured in11 and Jon Crank scored 8 in a wild game Tuesday evening.

The tale of this wild, crazy double overtime thriller begins back in the second quarter.  Louisville had seized momentum putting together a 7-0 run to take a 20-18 lead.  Frustrated with the officiating, or lack there of, the Leopards drew a technical foul for seemingly harmless comments.  Louisville turned possession back over to New Philadelphia and the Quakers made them pay by hitting both free throws and a three-pointer.

Then on the other end of the court Kelly buried a three-pointer and a Quaker foul was called after the shot.  In the confusion, Kelly went to the line to shoot the 1-and-1 and swished home the front end.  However, Trevor Meredith was the one fouled after the bucket.  After some debate among the officials they decided to subtract a point off the guest side of the scoreboard.  Meredith missed the free throw and the Quakers retained possession.

New Philadelphia’s Marco Colombo would later hit a three just as time expired putting the Quakers up 30-27 at halftime.  Colombo would finish with 13 points for the night, while the team’s leading scorer Brandon Fowler scored 12 of his team-high 21 points in the first half alone.  A game of inches and seconds was just beginning.

Facing adversity, the boys in blue came out fighting in the second half.  In the first two quarters they had been out-rebounded 13-7, but in the third quarter they crashed the boards for 10 rebounds.  Rebounding along with making 3 of 6 shots from beyond the arch (from Trevor Hostetler, Kelly, and O’brien) allowed The Leps to take a small advantage into the the final period of regulation.

The Quakers again stole points away from the Leopards lead when Ethan Boose hit from the lane as the buzzer signaled the end of the third leaving the Leopard lead at 39-37.  Boose finished the night with 11 points.

Things heated up in the fourth.  New Philadelphia answered the bell from downtown three times.  Not to be outdone, O’brien hit home 3 of his 5 three-pointers on the night in the final eight minutes of regulation.  Later he sunk two clutch free throws with under a minute to go to cut the Quakers lead to 53-52.

The Leopards fouled on the ensuing possession, but were not yet in the penalty.  Consequently, Louisville’s Jeremy McQuilkin tipped the inbound pass away, causing a mad scramble, and forcing a jump ball.  Kelly was eventually fouled on the way to the rack and hit the first of two free throws to tie the game at 53-53 with 18 seconds to play.  The second attempt rattled off, but the Quakers failed to connect on two mid-range jumpers on the opposite end.  To overtime they went.

The Quakers pressed Louisville midway through the period and they paid the price.  A quick cross court heave from  Bill Lairson to O’brien drew the defenders in.  O’brien then easily bounced a pass to a wide open Cody Cheezan who laid it in to make it 56-54 Louisville.  After an exchange of possessions, Fowler hit from the far left corner to give the lead back to the Quakers 57-56.

Another three-ball by O’brien was answered by a Ron Miller deep ball for New Philadelphia.  With the Leopards trailing 60-59, McQuilkin hit the second of two free throws with 12.5 seconds remaining on the other side of the court.  Miller’s attempt at a game winning shot rimmed out sending the game into a second extra period.

The Quakers were mediocre from the free throw line making 20 of 32 for the game.  However, in the second overtime they produced enough defensive stops and scored all 10 of their points from 16 attempts at the line.

Kelly and Lairson combined to make cut the deficit to 70-67 with just four seconds remaining.  The Quaker students confidently cheered “This One’s Over!” as they watched both of Miller’s free throws miss their target.  New Philadelphia was then called for an over the back foul putting Lairson on the line for the Leps.  His first attempt circled the rim and fell off with just 2.7 seconds remaining.  The Leps could not come up with the rebound on the intentionally missed second shot and thus their was no miracle shot to tie the game.

This team is so close to getting over the hump.  The boys are continuing to give 100% every game and their chemistry is starting to really show.  The Leps headed by Coach Tom Siegfried are going to be a scary team to play in the upcoming weeks.
