The Louisville Leopards Boys Varsity Basketball Team earned a convincing 70-48 win over the visiting Massillon Tigers Friday Night at Louisville High School. The Leopards have now won 5 of their last 6 to improve to 6-4 on the year.
Senior Scotty Gronow scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to lead Louisville to a 28-20 halftime advantage. Senior Allen Staley also scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half as the Leopards scorched the nets in building a 20-point advantage at the end of three quarters. Senior Collin Chambers also added 11 for LHS.
Gronow scored 10 points in the first quarter alone as Louisville took a 14-8 lead out of the gate. The Leopards edged the Tigers 14-12 in the second quarter before erupting for 27 points in the third quarter to build a 55-35 cushion. Louisville would outscore Massillon 15-13 in the final period as well.
The Tigers (7-2) were led by Senior Jaden Stock who scored all of team-high 10 points in the second half. Junior Jayden Ballard also hit 3 three-pointers in finishing with 9 and Junior Luke Sabo also tacked on 9 for Massillon.
Free throws proved to be a stark difference in the contest as the Tigers out-fouled the Leopards 22-12. Louisville converted 15 of 22 (68%) shots from the charity stride while Massillon made just 4 of 8 (50%).
The Leopards have now won 3 of their last 4 meetings against the Tigers in the recent series that rebooted in 2015. This is Louisville’s first win at home over Massillon since a 74-66 victory over the Tigers on February 12, 1982. The school’s never met on the hardwood from 1985-2014. The Leopards still trail the all-time series 7-15 which includes a 3-6 record when playing at LHS.
