Leopards Cage Griffins 58-51 at Bulldog Battle II – Girls Basketball

The Louisville Leopards Girls Basketball Team defeated the Akron Buchtel Griffins 58-51 as part of the Bulldog Battle II showcase held at Canton Memorial Fieldhouse early Saturday Afternoon. Louisville improves to 2-0 on the young season with the victory.

Erin Hahn scored a team-high 13 points to go along with a game-high 6 steals and 5 rebounds to lead the Lady Leopards. Kayla Gibson also hit a pair of three-pointers in the first half and finished in double figures with 11. Sydney Bast, Paige Cole, Maggie Galentine, and Sherilynn Mullett also added 8 points each as Louisville shot 42% (21 of 50) from the floor.

The Lady Leopards 1-3-1 defense wreaked havoc on the Griffins throughout the first half. Louisville took a 17-10 lead after one quarter of play and extended their lead to 34-18 by halftime. Buchtel mounted a rally in the second half in outscoring the Leopards 17-11 in the third quarter and 16-13 in the final period. However, Louisville would shoot 11 of 14 (78%) from the line for the game and Cole would hit all 4 of the Leopards attempts in the final quarter to help seal the deal.

Cole also recorded a team high 6 assists and pulled down 5 rebounds. Fellow Sophomore Sherilyn Mullett obtained a team leading 8 boards. Other highlights included Bast with 3 steals and Galentine with 3 assists.

My Fit Life Personal Trainer AdThe Griffins were led by Rogers who poured in a game-high 18 points and registered a game leading 9 rebounds. Jackson also had 12 points and 6 boards, Nash scored double figures with 10 points and 7 rebounds, and Chance pulled down 7 caroms. Buchtel dominated the boards 39-27 which included a 21-9 advantage on the offensive glass.

This is just the second meeting between the two schools in Girls Varsity Basketball with the series now tied 1-1. The Griffins defeated the Leopards 61-45 in the Division II Lake Sectional Tournament on February 19, 1997 in their previous matchup. At 2-0, this is Louisville’s best start since the 2011-12 season.

UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next hit the road to take on the Tuslaw Mustangs on Tuesday, November 27. JV will begin at 6:00 PM and Varsity will follow at 7:30 PM.
