Louisville Leopards at Oakwood Golden Raiders 1971 Football Highlights
Louisville 34, Oakwood 0
“It was just a night we seemed to do everything right,” Leopards Head Coach Paul Starkey said following the Louisville Leopards 34-0 shutout of the host Oakwood Golden Raiders back on September 17, 1971. “The defense especially came on and that makes us happy.”
Louisville dominated the line of scrimmage running the ball 42 times for 229 yards as a team. Ken Kuhn ran 16 times for 86 yards and scored the first touchdown of the contest and Hobie Baker also finished with 8 carries for 47 yards and a 15 yard touchdown run to score the last touchdown of the game.
When the Leopards did pass it was golden as they finished 4 of 6 for 141 yards through the air and threw two second quarter touchdown passes. Quarterback John Doerschuk hit receiver Mark Shook for a 41 yard score and Baker found Barry Emerick for a 68 yard touchdown via the halfback pass.
The Louisville defense also scored points of their own when Bob Blandford returned a fumble 7 yards for a score. Other scoring included Doug Shook catching a two-point conversion pass from Doerschuk and Dave Mazzan running for a conversion score as well. Mazzan would finish with 5 carries for 46 yards for the Leopards.
“Who knows? We might still be a contender for the League Title,” Starkey said after his team improved to 2-0. “At least we’re undefeated and not out of it.”
