Louisville Fends Off Massillon Rally for 38-35 Road Win – Girls Basketball

The Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball Team edged the host Massillon Tigers 38-35 Monday Night at Washington High School. With the victory, Louisville now holds a winning mark of 4-3 on the year.

Paige Cole scored all of her team-high 10 points in the first half help Louisville take a 20-11 advantage at the break. She also pulled down 5 boards and registered a game leading 3 blocks to lead the Lady Leopards. Kayla Gibson also had 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds and Sherilynn Mullett added 8 points to go along with 5 boards. 

Louisville extended their lead to double digits before the end of the third putting them up 28-18 heading into the final stanza. Massillon mounted a rally in nearly doubling their point total with 17 in the fourth. Duplain scored 8 of her game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Tigers surge. However, the Leopards would bury 8 of 9 free throw attempts to ice the game.

The game was won at the charity stride. Louisville scored 12 of their 18 points from the line in the second half and finished shooting 88% (15 of 17) at the stipe for the game. The Tigers ended the first half 0 of 8 from the line and only finished 44% (12 of 27) from the line for the contest as a result.

Each team shot under 30% for the game from the field. Louisville made 11 of 37 (29%) field goal attempts, while Massillon shot just 10 of 48 (20%). The Tigers did hold a slight 28-27 edge on the glass which included 13-5 advantage on the offensive boards. Duley led Massillon with a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with her 6 points on the night.

The Leopards held a 22-15 favor on the defensive glass led by Hanna Lautzenheiser who finished with 7 rebounds. Lautenzheiser and Erin Hahn also finished with 3 steals each as Louisville obtained 13 thefts as a team. 

This is the Leopards first win over the Tigers since they won at Massillon 48-46 exactly three years ago on December 10, 2015. The Lady Tigers had taken 6 out of their last 7 meetings prior to Monday’s contest. Louisville now leads the all-time series 14-10 which includes a 6-5 record in game’s played at Massillon. The 73 points scored is the lowest combined total during a regular season contest in the series between the two teams. The Leopards beat the Tigers 39-13 in the 1983 AAA Jackson Sectional Tournament for the lowest combined output overall.
