The Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball Team fell 3-2 in a seesaw affair against the host Massillon Tigers at Carl “Ducky” Schroeder Field Wednesday Evening. With the loss, Louisville falls to 5-5 on the year.
Gotshall Doubles In Roberts
Sophomore centerfielder Charlie Roberts led the Leopards at the dish finishing with 2 of the team’s 5 hits. Senior third baseman Kaedin Gotshall recorded Louisville’s only RBI on a 1-out double that scored Roberts to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning.
Following Gotshall’s double, pitching ruled the day as the next eight batters on both teams were retired and neither team got a hit until Roberts recorded his second single of the game in the top of the fifth.
Warner Strikes Out 5 on the Mound
Leopards junior starting pitcher Anthony Warner worked 5 1/3 innings, gave up 1 earned run on 4 hits, and struck out 5. Tigers starter Shane Rue also made it through 6 1/3 innings, gave up 1 earned run on 5 hits, and fanned 4. Neither starter would earn the decision as the team’s battled back-and-forth in the late innings.
Massillon Takes Lead on Triple Steal
Massillon retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a rare triple steal. Third baseman Zach Catrone singled to start the inning and both centerfielder Austin Cowan and right fielder Beau Balizet walked to load the bases with one out. On a 1-2 pitch, Catrone stole home to put the Tigers in front 2-1. Cowan took third and Balizet stole second on the same pitch.
Sophomore relief pitcher Connor Morley got out of the jam as the next two Massillon hitters flied out to Roberts in centerfield and junior JT Popick at shortstop.
Leopards Rally in the 7th
Louisville rallied in the seventh inning even after being down to their final out. Senior first baseman Ryan Aljancic singled to start the frame and Cory Noble bunted aboard advancing senior pinch-runner Colby Croxton to second. After outs were recorded in the next two at-bats, Gotshall walked to load the bases.
Popick hit a ground ball to third on the next pitch and an error allowed Noble to score the game-tying run on the play. However, the Leopards would leave the bases loaded, opening the door for a Tiger walk-off.
Pachis Delivers Walk-Off Double
First baseman and lead-off batter Jaylen Leedy singled to start the Massillon seventh and then advanced to second on a ground out to the pitcher. Second baseman Caden Pachis delivered the game-winning blow by cracking a double to center field that scored the winning run in Leedy.
Pitcher Jordan Weise earned the victory in relief for the Tigers. He also singled home catcher Luke Sabo to put Massillon the board first in the bottom of the second.
