Tony Alford kicked a game-winning 28 yard field goal with 5 seconds left in the game to lift the host Kent Roosevelt Rough Riders past the visiting Louisville Leopards 3-0 in the season opener on August 31, 1984.
After three quarters of scoreless football, the Leopards looked to break the stalemate with two goal-to-go opportunities in the fourth. Louisville was stopped early on in the fourth quarter and an 18 yard field goal attempt missed with 9:41 left to play.
LHS got the ball back after blocking a Rough Rider punt and recovered a the Kent Roosevelt 6. However, Louisville fumbled the chance away at the 1 yard line.
The Leopards chose to be aggressive with 2 1/2 minutes to play in the game. They executed a fake punt pass from midfield, but the attempt fell incomplete. The Rough Riders took over on downs and drove into the red zone courtesy of a Louisville pass interference cll. Alford did the rest to lift Kent.
