After going nearly a month without playing a game, the Lady Leopards basketball team returned to the court Saturday afternoon at Chardon High School. The Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball Team fell to the host Chardon Hilltoppers 62-55 in their return to action. With the loss, Louisville falls to 0-3 on the season.
Senior Sherilynn Mullett scored 12 of her team-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Lady Leopards. Fellow senior Paige Cole also poured in 10 fourth quarter points en rout to scoring 17 for the game. Junior Kelsey Adelman added 7 points for Louisville as well.
Chardon Takes Command with Early 11-1 Run
Chardon led throughout after breaking an early 4-4 tie with an 11-1 run to take a double digit first quarter advantage. The Lady Leopards managed to close the gap to 15-11 by the end of the period, but the Hilltoppers doubled them up 12-6 in the second quarter to to take a ten point 27-17 lead into the break.
The two teams went back-and-forth out of the locker room. Chardon still maintained their double digit advantage five minutes into the second half. However, Louisville surged over the final three minutes of the third to cut the deficit to 39-33 heading into the final quarter.
Louisville Chips Away in 4th Quarter
The Leopards defense got a stop on the opening Chardon possession. Then Louisville shrunk the Hilltopper lead to 39-35 when Mullett rebounded and tapped home a basket on the other end. The Leopards’ fortunes went down hill from there as Chardon used a 9-0 run to open up their largest lead of the game at 48-35.
Louisville chipped away in the final minutes and used a 16-7 run to again get within 4 points. Cole deflected a Hilltopper inbound in the back court into the hands of Adelman. Then freshman Brooke Haren grabbed her own rebound in the lane and put it back up and in to cut the Chardon lead to 55-51 with a minute to play.
Hilltoppers Ice the Game from the Line
The Hilltoppers would hit enough free throws down the stretch, making 14 of 22 in the fourth quarter overall, to ice the game. Louisville shot better from the line 67% (12 of 18) to Chardon’s 58% (21 of 36) for the game. But the Leopards out-fouled the opposition 25-14 for the contest, which enabled the Hilltoppers to double them up in free throw attempts. This proved to be the difference in the final outcome.
Chardon (4-2) was led by senior guard Jo Janda who made 3 three-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points. Also scoring in double figures for the Lady Hilltoppers were sophomore guard Erin Noerr with 14 and senior Sam Liechty with 13.
This was the first ever game between the two schools in girls basketball.
UP NEXT: The Lady Leopards will next host the Austintown Fitch Falcons on Monday, January 4. JV will begin at 6:00 PM and Varsity will follow around 7:30 PM.
