The #19 seed Louisville Leopards Boys Soccer Team fell to the host #9 seed Marlington Dukes 4-0 in their DIII Northeast 1 District Semifinal Thursday Night at the Marlington Soccer Stadium. With the loss, Louisville finishes the 2025 campaign with an even mark of 8-8-2.
Shannon Leads Dukes Past Leopards
Riley Shannon scored a second-half goal and provided both first half assists to lead Marlington. The Dukes set the tone early with a goal near the end of the sixth minute. In heavy traffic, Shannon kicked the ball away from what would have been a diving save by the Leopard goalkeeper. The ball drifted ahead to Maxwell Nichols who shot it into the open net to give Marlington the crucial early advantage.
Marlington doubled their lead in the 25th minute. Nichols delivered a pass to Shannon in the box who advanced it forward. Shannon then tapped it over to Tommy Miller who shot from the right side of the box into the left side of the net. The Dukes would take that 2-0 advantage into the break.
Marlington took a commanding 3-0 lead with Shannon’s lone goal just 2:02 into the second half. Dukes goalkeeper Brock Swisher made a leaping, finger-tipped catch off of a Louisville corner kick and punted it all the way to the other end of the field. Swisher retrieved it off a Leopard defender and got enough power on the ball to ricochet it off the goalkeeper and across the goal line.
Marlington Adds Fourth Goal and Tensions Boil Over
Marlington removed all doubt when they added a fourth goal with 16:54 remaining in the contest. Nichols delivered a cross pass to Andrew Frederick on the left side of the box. Frederick one-timed a kick back into the right side of the net to make it 4-nil.
Less than two minutes later, play got heated. Physicality on the field quickly turned into an intense exchange on the far sideline in front of fans and parents. The situation escalated when a Marlington player shoved a Louisville player to the ground. After a lengthy discussion, a yellow card was given to a Leopard player and yellow cards were issued for two Duke players.
After the dust settled, the two rivals played out the final 15:07 without any additional scoring and Marlington advanced to the District Championship game.
