Baker Scores Game-High 14 to Lead Louisville
Maggie Baker scored 10 of her game-high 14 points in the opening half as the Lady Leopards stormed out to a 20-5 halftime advantage. Baker cashed home 2 three-pointers in the second quarter as part of a 17-0 Louisville run that saw the Leopards shut out the Royals over a span of 12:28, including all of the second quarter.
Baker would add a third three-pointer from the left corner, matching a three scored by CVCA just seconds before. That triple put Louisville ahead 25-11 with 4:40 remaining in the third quarter.
The Leopards still led 28-16 heading into the fourth quarter before the Royals mounted a furious fourth-quarter rally. CVCA strung together a 12-0 run to knot the game at 30-30 with under two minutes to play. Baker split a pair of free throws to put Louisville up 31-30, but Savannah Crews answered by hitting 1-of-2 on the other end to tie the game at 31-31.
Tillett Scores 12 and Proves Clutch Down the Stretch
Neither team was able to capitalize on their next possession before Ella Tillett drew a foul and went to the line for Louisville with 30.2 seconds left. Tillett had missed 4 straight fourth-quarter free throws prior to that trip, but was clutch, hitting both from the line to put the Lady Leopards in front 33-31.
Out of a timeout, Tillett deflected a pass and then came up with the steal, giving Louisville possession back with 17.9 seconds left. The Lady Leopards were unable to add to their lead from the line, but the Leopard defense held the Royals off the board in the remaining seconds to secure their first win on the season.
Tillett scored in every quarter, finishing with 12 points. Other scorers for Louisville included Mikayla Salmons with 4, Mabel Kiko with 2, and Makayla Tanner with 1.
Zapsic Leads CVCA Rally with 12 in Second Half
Raela Zapsic hit a pair of three-pointers and scored all of her team-high 12 points in the second half to lead CVCA. She scored 7 points as part of the Royals’ fourth-quarter comeback. Crews also scored 6 of her 7 points in the fourth quarter, which included a make from beyond the arc.
Josie Brown was the only Royals scorer in the first half and finished with 5. Shaye Tepley scored all 5 of her points in the third quarter. Both Brown and Tepley hit a three-pointer. Giana Frye rounded out the CVCA scoring with a pair of fourth quarter free throws.
The Lady Royals are now 0-2 on the season. CVCA lost their opener at Boardman 55-48 on Monday.
