The Louisville Leopards Girls Varsity Basketball team used a fourth quarter rally to down the visiting Beatty's Louisville Leopards Pink Shirt Winter 2015Canton Central Catholic Crusaders 49-44 on Senior Night Wednesday at LHS. With the victory, Louisville finishes the regular season with a final record of 19-3.

Abby Beaver led the Leopards with a game-high 14 points and a game-high 5 assists. She also hit three clutch free throws in the final 8.9 seconds to clinch the victory for Louisville.

The Leopards three Seniors also came up big on their night in the spotlight. Emily Hollifield finished with 12 points & 3 steals, Sabryna Benzel scored 10 points & grabbed 6 rebounds, and Grace Jackson also pulled down a game-high 9 boards.

Offense was at a premium to start the game as Louisville took a 9-4 advantage eight minutes in. They maintained a 23-21 at the break, but watched it slip away in the third quarter. The Crusaders outscored the Leopards 11-6 in the period to take the lead at 32-29.

Louisville’s Seniors would not be denied in the end as they spearheaded a 16-3 run to start the fourth quarter. Hollifield’s immediate bucket on the opening possession set the tone early. Next, Jackson gave the Leopards the lead back when she pulled down a rebound and laid it back home while being fouled.

Later on, Benzel made back-to-back baskets off of dishes from Beaver. The second assist was a no-look pass that spun the Central defense in circles. The play was setup by a Hollifield steal on the defensive end.

Midway through the fourth, Benzel came up with a huge offensive rebound. She then kicked it out to Order Leopard Nation Highlight VideoHollifield at the top of the key and the Senior to Senior connection found the bottom of the net for three points. Less than a minute later, the same connection in reverse added two more points to the home team’s score and Louisville found themselves ahead 45-35 with three minutes left to go.

The game looked to be on ice, but the Crusaders resurrected with a 9-0 run. Emilee Flynn and Hanna Risaliti made back-to-back three-pointers to get Central within 45-44 with 1:15 left to play. Risaliti would hit 3 of the Crusaders 5 triples on the night and finish with 10. Flynn would also score 9 points on the evening, while Sarah Miller led the Crusaders with a team-high 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Leopards successfully used a four corner stall to run the clock down to 21.5 seconds before Jackson was fouled. She split a pair of free throws to extend the Louisville lead to 46-44.

After a Central timeout, the Leopards Seniors banded together to make one final stop. Benzel and Hollifield forced the Crusaders to take an ill-advised shot and Jackson pulled down the rebound off the miss. She shoved a pass over to Beaver who was immediately fouled.

With Louisville in the bonus, the Junior Point Guard threw down both free throws with ease to give her team a 48-44 lead with 8.9 seconds to play. Traveling was called on the other end and sparks began to fly. The Central Catholic bench was called for a technical and Beaver tacked on another freebie. Seconds later she caught the in-bound pass and watched the clock tick away to triple zeros.

With the victory, the Leopards have now won 6 out of their last 7 meetings against the Crusaders. Central Catholic still leads the all-time series 21-19, but Louisville improves to 9-8 at home in the series. The Lady Leopards are now 6-2 in out of conference play and are now 10-2 at home this season.

Prior to the game, Louisville honored their three Seniors Sabryna Benzel, Emily Hollifield, and Grace Jackson. Leopard Nation would like to personally thank these three athletes for all of their hard work and dedication put into making the Lady Leopards Basketball program what it is today. We wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors beyond LHS!
