Girls Basketball Avenges Earlier Loss at Green
Louisville 44, Green 39
The Louisville Lady Leopards won a rematch with the host Green Bulldogs 44-39 Wednesday Evening in the Dog Pound. With the victory, Louisville improves their record to 5-6 on the year.
Sarah Lairson led the Lady Leopards with a team-high 12 points, a game-high 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Emily Hollifield also dropped in 11 points and both Abby Beaver and Sabryna Benzel tallied 8 a piece for Louisville.
A big key to the Leopards success was the third quarter in which they held the Bulldogs to only 3 points in taking a 34-26 lead into the final period. Louisville extended their advantage to double digits with 4:20 remaining, but Green rallied back to 40-36 with under a minute left.
Lairson canned a pair of free throws on the next possession to put the Leopards ahead 42-36. Then on the Bulldogs ensuing possession, Benzel intercepted a pass for Louisville and was fouled. Green got the ball back and McKenzie Black buried a three-ball to chop the Leopard lead in half at 42-39 with 11.0 seconds left.
Black finished with 11 points and 2 three-pointers for the game. Her teammate Julia Guyton produced a stat line that included a game-high 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals.
On Louisville’s final possession, Beaver iced the game with a pair of free throws with 7.2 seconds left as the Leopards took the game 44-39. The win snaps a two-game losing streak against Green and evens the all-time series at 3-3. This game marks the first time these two squads have met on a non-neutral court.
