East Falls to West in Stark County All-Star Game

West 17, East 7

The East All-Stars fell to the West All-Stars 17-7 Saturday Evening in the Annual Stark County East-West All-Star Game held at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

The East’s lone score came on a 14 yard touchdown pass from Louisville Quarterback Connor Zwick to Marlington Receiver Dylan Simmons with 6:02 remaining in the second quarter. Zwick would have a busy night of offense completing 24 of 44 passes for 207 yards and finishing as the East’s leading rusher with 16 carries for 51 yards.

Leopards Receiver Kyle Woost led the East in catches with 6 for 53 yards. Other Louisville contributors included Ryan Lautner with 2 receptions for 12 yards and Jake Mathie with 6 tackles on defense.

West efforts were led by Central Catholic Quaterback Jake Boccuti who was 15 of 30 through the air for 184 yards. Boccutti hit Canton South’s Matt Shaffer for a 40 yard touchdown pass to open the scoring in the second quarter.

Later on, Massillon’s JD Crabtree made defenders miss on his way to a 38 yard touchdown run for the West with 7:08 left in the third quarter. Crabtree would finish as the game’s leading rusher with 11 touches for 53 yards.

Three Crusaders players helped the West ice the game late in the fourth. Boccuti found teammate Beatty's Sports Spring 2014 Hat - Leopard HeadJimmy Russell for a 67 yard gain to setup the West on the East 15. Russell finished as the game’s leading receiver with 6 catches for 89 yards. After three plays netting 6 yards, Central’s Nick Boron made a 26 yard field goal from the left hash mark to put the West ahead 17-7 with only 2:10 remaining.

The East’s defense was led by GlenOak’s Justin Robinson who ended two early West threats. He batted away a touchdown pass in the endzone on fourth down to end the first threat and then recovered a West fumble on the East 10-yard-line to end the second threat.

However, the difference in the contest proved to be turnovers. The East surrendered 6, while the West only gave the ball up once. Lake’s Anthony Cistone had an East-West All-Star Game record 3 picks, which included a 49-yard interception return from the goal line to end the East’s final threat with 8 seconds left. Other West players recording interceptions included David Bates (Canton South), Chase Champagne (Lake), and Danny Robinson (Massillon).
