Dublin Jerome Celtics at Louisville Leopards 2005 Playoff Football Highlights
Louisville 48, Dublin Jerome 13
Top-Seeded Louisville dismantled Dublin Jerome 48-13 in the DII, Region 7 Quarterfinals back on November 4, 2005.
Drew Kuhn led the Leopards with 171 yards passing, 119 yards rushing, and was involved in 5 touchdowns. Kuhn scored twice on the ground, threw for two scores, and had a pick six.
Kuhn’s favorite target was Bill Poyser who made 4 receptions for 62 yards. Two long Kuhn to Poyser connections setup each of Kuhn’s 1 yard touchdown runs to give Louisville a 14-0 advantage.
The Leopards Ben Schmucker showed he could be a triple threat as he caught a 49 yard touchdown pass, returned the opening second half kickoff 90 yards for a score, and threw a 63 yard touchdown pass to Clay Swigert in the fourth quarter. Swigert also intercepted a pass in the second quarter that setup the Kuhn to Schmucker touchdown connection.
“All week long, we thought about this being our last home game,” said Jared Smith who was part of an All-Senior clad offensive line. “The whole week our coaches told us exactly what would happen, and we were prepared for everything. This was the perfect cap to a really good week.”
Kyle Smith’s 24 yard touchdown grab with 5:34 remaining in the third quarter extended the Louisville lead to 34-0. The Celtics would answer with a touchdown drive that was capped off by Steven Simonetti’s 8 yard touchdown run.
Dublin Jerome followed their score by attempting and recovering an onside kick. Kuhn put an end to that madness by stepping in front of a pass and taking it 55 yards to the house. The Celtics finished the evening just 2 of 16 passing for 43 yards.
Louisville held Jerome to only 12 yards in the first half and just 6 first downs all game. Corey Hoover, Jared Nicholson, Austin Power, Blake Ruffing, Kevin Sears, and Brian Whaley made their presence known in the Celtic backfield all night long.
“The guys up front on defense did a great job,” said Kuhn said of his teammates. “All week long, I never touched a ballcarrier during practice. It wasn’t that much different tonight.”
Jerome’s only other score came via a blocked punt that Jacob Phillips returned 30 yards for a score. Louisville returned the favor late when Josh Hostetler blocked a punt that Whaley recovered deep in Celtic territory.
“They’ll make me leave the field at some point tonight,” Kuhn spoke of he and his fellow Seniors final game at Louisville Stadium. “I’ll be walking slow while I do.”
