The Louisville Leopards 8th Grade Football Team fell to the visiting CVCA Royals 29-14 Wednesday Evening at Louisville Leopards Stadium. With the loss, Louisville drops to 1-5 on the season.
Long Hits Simpson for Leopards First Score
Quarterback Parker Long hit Troy Simpson for a 19-yard touchdown reception to get the Leopards on the board. Long would run right for the two-point conversion on the next snap to cut the Louisville deficit to 14-8 with 3:07 remaining in the third quarter.
Long and Simpson would connect three times for 95 yards on the evening. Earlier in the same scoring drive, Long went deep down the right sideline on 3rd-and-16 and Simpson hauled in the catch over top of a defender for a 39-yard gain to move the sticks. Similarly in the opening quarter, Simpson hauled in a 37-yard reception when Long went over the top on 3rd-and-10.
Schloneger Breaks Loose for Late 55-Yard TD Run
With CVCA in command 29-8, Jayden Schloneger came off the bench to play quarterback for the Leopards’ final drive. He handed off to Henry Laughlin who ran up the middle for 10 yard sand a first down. On the next play, Schlonger faked a handoff and kept the ball himself finding a seam down the left sideline for a 55-yard touchdown run to trim the Royals’ lead to 29-14 with 1:58 left in the contest.
That final drive accounted for 65 of Louisville’s 80 net rushing yards on the evening. Damon Gail also ran for 25 yards, including a 13-yard run that setup the Leopards’ first touchdown.
Clegg Leads CVCA with 192 Yards and 3 TDs
Running back Maverick Clegg ran the ball 23 times for 192 yards, three touchdowns, and scored a conversion to lead CVCA. Clegg set the tone early with a 42-yard touchdown run down the left sideline on the Royals’ first play from scrimmage. He would also find pay dirt from 5 yards out on the opening drive of the second half. Clegg then scored again from 3 yards away after Cole Kuznicki recovered a muffed punt to setup CVCA with their best field position of the game at the Louisville 17-yard line.
The Royals compiled 250 yards on the ground on 37 attempts. Dylan Herman also found the end zone from a yard out for their fourth and final touchdown on the ground.
Quarterback Trevor Skolnekovich finished 5 of 12 passing for 54 yards and recorded an interception on defense. Skolnekovich’s top target was Herman who made 4 catches for 36 yards and caught a two-point conversion pass.
Haugen Leads the Louisville Defense
Jax Haugen made a tackle for a 6-yard loss on Clegg in the second quarter to force a CVCA punt keeping the game within reach. He later combined with Gail for back-to-back TFLs to force the Royals to punt on 4th-and-17.
UP NEXT: The 8th Grade Leopards will next travel to take on the Western Stark Catholic Crusaders on Wednesday, October 1 at 5:30 PM.
