The Louisville Leopards Boys Soccer team stunned the Defending NBC Champion Minerva Lions 2-1 Louisville Leopards Grey Bag - Beatty's Sports - Fall 2016Tuesday Night at Louisville Leopards Stadium. With their third straight victory, Louisville improves to 3-2 overall and maintains first place in the NBC with a record of 2-0.

The Leopards got on the board first in the 10th minute. Derek Zeller deflected away a Minerva pass and Matt Perez took possession of it around midfield. He then pushed it ahead into traffic where Bailey Adams gained control of it, charged ahead of three Lions defenders, and beat the charging Minerva goalie to make it 1-0 Louisville.

Goalie Jarrett Zwick made one leaping and two diving saves in the first half to help the Leopards maintain their advantage. Zwick would finish with seven saves in goal for the evening.

The Lions finally broke through on a freak play in the 30th minute. Minerva drew a corner kick and JennCanAdkicked the ball into the outer left side of the net & out of bounds. However, the ref had not whistled for the play to start and thus the Lions gained new life. Sophomore Taylor Lowmiller made the most of it as his ensuing Corner Kick deflected off of the back of a Leopards defender and into the net.

Neither team scored during the next 20 minutes of game time. Louisville finally broke the stalemate during the 50th minute. Sophomore Midfielder Travis Pape drew a foul from outside of the box allowing the Leopards to take a free kick. Adams buried the 22 yard boot into the top right of the net to give Louisville the lead back.

Louisville kept up the pressure during the final 30:31, in an effort that proved that your best defense can sometimes be your offense. The Leopards more than doubled up the Lions in total shots for the game 20-9.

Minerva threatened a few times, but the Louisville defense was there to stop them every time. With Leopard Nation $5 Challengeunder four minutes to play, the Lions shot a Corner Kick into a crowd of players. Zwick launched up and made the save to end the Lions opportunity.

The win snaps Minerva’s 9-game winning streak in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference. The Lions last  league loss came on September 30, 2014 in a 1-0 loss to West Branch. Minerva now stands at  2-1-1 overall and 1-1 against the league.

The victory is the Leopards first over the Lions since they defeated them at home 2-1 back on October 5, 2010.  Minerva had won the previous five meetings coming into Tuesday. Louisville now leads the all-time series 10-7-1, which includes a 4-3 mark when playing at home.
