SOFTBALL: Louisville 6, Copley 5

The Lady Leopards softball team’s first scrimmage of the year was a thriller.  Chandler Rice cracked a home run to tie the game  in the bottom of the 7th, and Gianna Falcone drove home Kyleigh Zwick on a crazy play to take a 6-5 victory in the eighth.

It did not take long for Desi Givens to start her senior season off with a bang.  After back-to-back strikeouts Givens crushed a solo home run to give Louisville a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the opening inning.

Copley answered in the top of the second with a run of their own, but Annie Woolf singled to lead off the bottom of the frame.  She then advanced to second and third on back-to-back fielder’s choices, before scoring on a wild pitch to break the tie.

After a scoreless third inning, three Louisville errors in the top of the fourth helped Copley pull out to a 3-2 lead.  But, the Lady Leps eliminated the deficit on a double by Woolf and that scored Rice in the bottom of the inning.  Louisville again trailed by a single run at 5-4 in the last of the seventh when Rice planted the ball several yards over the center field fence to send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth Brittany Flannigan struck out the first two hitters she faced before a fly out sent the game into the bottom of the extra frame.  Flannigan pitched a total of 4 innings, struck out 8, and gave up 0 earned runs.

In the last of the eighth Kyleigh Zwick reach first on a fielder’s choice.  With two outs, Gianna Falcone stepped to the plate.  Falcone looked to have hit into a simple groundout, but the first baseman could not dig out the shortstops low throw allowing her to reach first safely.  Then Zwick rounded second and took off for third.  The throw to pick her off soared down the left field line and Zwick came home safely.  In the nature of a scrimmage, the two teams finished the inning out, but the game had been clinched and the Lady Leps won 6-5.
