North Canton Hoover 41, Louisville 14

The Louisville Leopards Varsity Football Team fell to the visiting North Canton Hoover Vikings 41-14 Friday Night at Louisville Leopards Stadium. With the loss, Louisville drops to 0-2 on the season.

Leopards Quarterback Jared Mathie completed 16 of 36 passes for 202 yards, ran for a team-leading 60 yards on 11 carries, and had 2 total touchdowns. Max Hartline also had 5 catches for 66 yards and a fourth quarter touchdown grab for Louisville.

The Vikings scored on each of their first three possessions to build a 20-0 advantage. The Leopards went three-and-out on their first two drives. On their third drive, Louisville converted multiple third downs before stalling at the Hoover 23. The 4th-and-6 pass down the left sideline was broken up giving the ball back to North Canton.

The Leopards first scoring drive started from their own 42 after Cam Lingle returned a kickoff 24 yards. On the first series Mathie hit Wide Receiver Davis Burick over the middle to convert a 3rd-and-9 across midfield. The pair connected again on the next play for another 16 yard chunk to the Vikings 29.

The next three plays only netted a yard setting up a 4th-and-9 for Louisville. Mathie dropped back into the pocket which quickly began to collapse. He busted through a sack and found some room on the right side of the field. A juke move avoided another tackler and Mathie cleared the need first down yardage with a gain of 14. Two plays later, Mathie ran a draw up the gut 11 yards to paydirt to make it 20-7.

The Leopards did add to their total again until they mounted a 15 play, 78 yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter. A Mathie to Burick 17 yard connection got things moving and a Mathie to Bryce Zuppe 16 yard completion flipped the field to the Vikings 42. Zuppe caught 5 passes for 63 yards for the night.

After that, Burick carried defenders off a bubble screen to convert a 3rd-and-10 to the Hoover 29. A North Canton sack set things back, but a pass interference gave it right back to Louisville. Facing a 4th-and-6, Mathie rifled a pass to Hartline in the middle of the endzone to make it 41-14 with 3:25 left in the contest.

North Canton out-gained Louisville in total offense 434-289, which included a 321-87 advantage on the ground. Quarterback John Keller led the Vikings with 13 carries for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns. Runningback Luke Reicosky was right behind him with 17 rushes for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns. Reicosky’s back-breaking 40 yard touchdown run in the second quarter put Hoover up 20-0.

Keller was also a near perfect 9 of 10 passing for 113 yards and a touchdown. He hit Wide Receiver Brady Nist in stride for a 41 yard first quarter aerial score. Nist finished with 2 catches for 56 yards and Cord Haubert made 4 grabs for 28 yards.

Both team’s played a clean game throughout with only 3 total penalties for 30 yards and no turnovers on either side. A big difference came in early down production as Louisville would face 17 third-downs, while Hoover only flipped the marker to third down 4 times.

This is the first time the Vikings have won at Louisville since they downed the Leopards 38-7 on September 5, 2003. Louisville still leads the all-time series 55-35-5 over North Canton, which includes a 30-15-3 record in the series at home. This is also the first time the Vikings have won back-to-back meetings with the Leopards since winning three in a row from 1997-99.

UP NEXT: The Leopards will next travel to Austintown Fitch to take on the Falcons on Friday, September 8 at 7:00 PM.
