5. Track Sweeps the NBC, Boys Earn First Title Since 1973
When the Louisville Leopards Boys Cross Country Team won State last Fall you just got the feeling that it was going to be a very special year for Boys Track. Led by Coach Jerry Fresenko the boys finished first in the NBC to give Louisville Boys Track their first league title in 38 years.
After a thunderstorm delay at the NBC Meet in Carrollton, Louisville took over. Curtis Hanle blew past Marlington’s Brian Baum to capture the 1,600 in 4:26.48. Andrew Nelson also grabbed fourth place in the 1,600 aiding the Leopards to victory.
Not to be outdone by the boys historic championship, the girls track team treated 2011 like business as usual in capturing their fourth straight NBC Title.
The girls actually trailed by 17 points to Canton South with just a few events remaining. But, Mattie Rankin won the 1,600 and Brooke Mathie captured second to give the Leopards a 1-point lead. Also, Alyx Crislip won her second individual league title in as many years with a 15-9 1/2 in the long jump. Mackenzie Rankin finished second in the long jump and the Lady Leps cruised to victory.
The Track championships by both the boys and girls gave Louisville their third and fourth league titles of the Spring. The Leopards dominated the 2010-11 year capturing nine NBC titles, more than half of all the NBC’s official sports.
