PREVIEW

Well its Week 7 and what looked like a gimme game earlier this season, may be a tougher test than expected with two of the Leopards leaders going out with injuries last week at Alliance.  The Leps have won 24 out of the last 25 games played against the NBC’s most southern foe in a series that dates back to 1926. A two week battle against Warrior opponents begins Friday night.

LEOPARDS

OFFENSE: Quarterback Chad Neff and Lucas Poyser have been involved in gaining 98% of the Leopards total offensive yards from scrimmage through passing and rushing season.  However, both Neff and Poyser left last week’s game against Alliance with injuries.  Neff is listed as doubtful for Friday’s contest, so in will step the less experienced but more than capable sophomore quarterback Joey Duckworth.  Duckworth has been lighting opponents up in the JV games this season and can throw the long ball very well.  Against Alliance he did throw two interceptions, but the first was a jump ball and the second one was a desperation throw on a long fourth down.  Duckworth later redeemed himself with a beautiful touch pass to Gavin Lovejoy in the endzone.  Altogether Duckworth was 7-of-12 against Alliance for 112 yards.  Duckworth may share reps at quarterback with Senior Jon Crank who immediately replaced Neff last Friday.  They will look for a host of talented receivers including Trent Ohman, Lovejoy, and Dillon Stertzbach to step up big against the Warriors.  This trio has combined for 70 catches this season for 931 yards and 5 of Louisville’s 8 receiving touchdowns.  Louisville has struggled running the ball when Poyser has been on the sidelines.  Poyser is expected to play, but if he is limited from the injury he suffered last week then expect for runningbacks Aaron Reynolds and Trey Hayford to carry the load.

DEFENSE: The Leopards defense still have some issues in stopping both the run and pass.  Last week at Alliance, several Aviator dropped balls could have easily gone for big gains or even scores.  Alliance’s quarterback Taurice Scott also made Louisville’s defense look foolish in the first quarter on several runs that involved miss tackles.  However, the Leps defense did clamp down to shutout Alliance in the final three quarters.  A sack and fumble recovery by Gary Anile as Alliance edged closer to the endzone put an exclamation point on the defense’s performance.  8 of the 9 Leopards takeaways this season have been fumble recoveries.  Louisville is allow 186 yards rushing and 113 yards passing per game.  The Leopards should be able to key in on the run come Friday night as that is by far the majority of Carrollton’s offense.

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Leps appeared to right the ship on the phase of the game that has been their achilles heal all season last game.  Louisville converted 2-of-2 two point conversions, which helped them gain room for error.  Merrick Storlie kicked two extra points through and Justin Romy also banged through an extra point.  With the game in the bag, one of the Leopards PAT’s was blocked though, yet still Louisville scored 7 points on 6 PAT’s.  If Neff remains sidelined, look for Alex Schooley and Mike Weiss to assume the punting duties.  Schooley has booted 2 for 70 yards and Weiss has also booted 2 for 68 yards this year.

WARRIORS

OFFENSE: The Warriors have averaged 22 points per game through the first six contest, with most of their damage coming on the ground.  In fact, Carrollton’s run to pass ration is about 5 to 1.  Carrollton’s leading rusher and passer is quarterback Damon Anderson.  On the ground, he has 728 yards on 125 carries & 4 touchdowns, and passing he is just 20 for 53 for 273 yards, has 2 touchdowns, but has thrown 7 interceptions.  When Anderson doesn’t advance the ball himself, he’ll hand it off to runningback Jake Peterson who has accounted for 376 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns this season.  His other go-to guy is Cody Walker has caught 6 passes for 124 yards and a touchdown receiving, while also racking up 241 yards and a touchdown on the ground.  The Leopards have had trouble stopping the run this year, but if Carrollton becomes one-dimensional early, Louisville should have no trouble shutting them down.

DEFENSE: The Warriors defense has had trouble stopping everyone this season giving up 43 points and 389 yards of offense a game.  Carrollton only has six takeaways this season, all of them fumbles.  Kyser Clark leads the Warriors in tackles with 39 and fellow linebacker Austin Miller is right behind him with 38.  Walker leads all defensive backs with 34 tackles, but the Warriors secondary is still looking for their first pick.  Cornerback Cody Stragan has had no problem becoming part of opponent’s backfields recording 3 sacks part of 5 tackles for losses.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Ben Knotts has been a solid kicker for the Warriors making 13 of 15 extra points and converting on all three field goals he’s attempted.  He has hit from up to 35 yards out this season, while also assuming the punting duties for the team.  Walker also has explosiveness as a return man as he returned a 70 yard punt for a touchdown against Dover and had an 89 yard kick return for a touchdown last week against Marlington.  Louisville may want to avoid kicking to him as much as possible, because is probably Carrollton’s biggest threat to change field position.
