The 2015 Louisville Leopards Varsity Baseball team swept the Canton South Wildcats for the first time since 2010. Both victories required an extra frame as the Leopards defeated the Wildcats 7-6 in 8 innings at home on April 21, 2015 and then 8-7 at Canton South also in 8 innings on April 23, 2015.
In the first contest, the Leopards rallied from a 4-2 deficit with a 4-run fourth inning. Brock Haren
delivered a 2-run single to tie the game. Then with two outs, Joe Crank dived head-first into first base to earn an infield single that allowed Reis Rankin to score. On the next play, Haren stole home after Crank got into a rundown between first and second.
Canton South tied the game back up at 6-6 with two runs in the top of the fifth. The Wildcats threatened again in the seventh loading the bases with two outs, but a fly out to right ended the threat.
In the bottom of the eight, Louisville loaded the bases and Haren blasted a walk-off single that hit chalk down the left field line. The game-winner brought home Adam Nyland from third sending the Leopards into a frenzy and a mobbing at first base.
The Leopards again rallied to beat the Wildcats in their second meeting. Trailing 7-5 in the top of the sixth, Jake Adams and Alex Hewitt each provided RBI singles to knot the game at 7-7.
The go-ahead run came in the top of the eight when Adams hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to score Haren from third. Nyland preserved the 8-7 Louisville lead with a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth to take the game.
The Leopards (10-4) would end up finishing third in the NBC behind Outright Champion West Branch (12-2) and Canton South (11-3). However, the sweep of South put them into position for a chance to win the league during the final week of the season. Louisville rebounded from a losing season in 2014 (9-14) to finish 17-12 overall for the 2015 campaign and planting a seed of future success for the Leopards Baseball program.
