Macy Byrd penetrated the lane and scored with 1.8 seconds remaining to lift the Perry Lady Panthers over the Louisville Lady Leopards 42-41 Tuesday night at Perry High School.  The game marks the end of a 3-3 road trip in which the Lady Leps lost all three games to non-conference opponents.  Brianna Libertore led the Lady Leps with 15 points, while Molly Brown scored 10 and Mackenzie Storlie added 9 against the Panthers.

Well, the road trip is over.  The grueling six games away from home ended with a miserable one-point loss at the hands of the Perry Panthers.  The same Panthers who’s season was ended by the Lady Leps in the Alliance Division I Sectional Final last year.  These Panthers were determined to defend their home court and seek revenge.

The match-up turned out to be a game of streaks starting in the second quarter when Perry jumped out to a 15-9 lead.  Louisville managed to cut the lead as slim as possible when Libertore made a buzzer beating basket in the lane to make it 19-18 at the break.  Libertore scored 9 of her 15 points in a very defensive first half.

Louisville would then rocket out to a 27-21 lead to start the second half capping off an 11-2 run.  Clara Lemmon had a putback layup, Libertore found Brown for a bucket, Brown then score two from the line, and Storlie followed by hitting her second three-pointer of the game.

Just when you felt like the Lady Leopards were going to take over the game, Perry seized momentum by scoring the next 13 points.  Byrd’s second three-pointer of the game gave Perry a 34-27 advantage with 6:00 remaining in the contest.  Byrd would finish the night with with a team-leading 14 points for the Lady Panthers.

After a few exchanged possessions, the Leps started to mount a comeback.  From the field Storlie got a shot to drop in, Libertore made a pair of buckets, and then a steal by Storlie led to a Chandler Rice basket giving Louisville a 39-38 lead with 104 ticks left on the clock.

The lead would then change hands twice in the next 40 seconds starting with Byrd driving to the basket and scoring to put the Panthers back on top by a single digit.  Then, on the other end, Lemmon bounced a pass to Brown who kissed the ball off the glass for 2 to make it 41-40 Leopards with 1:05 remaining.

Each team exchanged missed opportunities at the free throw line before Perry got the ball back with 35 seconds remaining.  The Leps defense stiffened to allow no Perry shot attempts, forcing the Panthers to call a timeout with 7.3 left.  Perry Head Coach Abbey Allerding quickly drew up a play in the huddle and it would end up working to perfection.  Byrd received the lobbed in-bound just over-top of the defending Brown on the left wing.  She dribbled right, then dribbled left, before spinning in front of the left elbow and fearlessly attacking the lane that was occupied by three Louisville defenders.  Her layup hit home and Kaitlyn Bucksar would intercept the ensuing Leopard in-bound to run-off the remaining 1.8 seconds.  Ball Game, 42-41 Perry.

Well…the road trip is over.  It included two heartbreaking losses in Massillon and 1 backbreaking loss at Lake.  However, the road trip did include the Lady Leopards taking care of business at Alliance, Canton South, and Minerva.  While they did lose three games, none of them counted towards the league standings.  The Lady Leps will look to redeem themselves as they finally return to the comforts of Louisville High School this Saturday with a mammoth league and season-defining game against the West Branch Warriors.

Hollyann Mullett led the Lady Leps with 11 points and Mackenzie Rankin also scored 7 to lead Louisville during a 43-34 loss to the JV Perry squad.  The loss snaps a 4-game winning streak for the reserve girls.  The Leps trailed just 4-3 after a defensive struggle in the first quarter and would fail to outscore the Panthers in the final three periods.  One thing the Lady Leps did do well was shoot the three-ball.  They converted on 4 three-pointers from Sydney Bartolet, Mullett, Taylor Noble, and Mackenzie Rankin.  Rachel Zeller also scored 5 points for 9-4 Louisville.
