Preview & History of Leopards Tournament Basketball
On the eve of the Leopards opening tournament game against Boardman lets take a flashback to the last 50 years of tournament history for Louisville Boys Basketball.
Tomorrow’s game against the Spartans is the first time Louisville is playing outside of Division II since 1987 when they lost to North Canton Hoover 58-37 in Class “AAA.” In 1988, the OHSAA rearranged the tournaments from 3 Classes to 4 Divisions, which allowed Louisville to enter Division II.
In Division II the Leopards went 22-24 up until last year. The deepest they ever made it in the tournament ever was in 1993 when they won their first District Championship a 57-49 victory over Triway. A 76-61 loss to Villa-Angela St. Joseph followed in the Regional Semifinals at the University of Akron.
In the years following 1993, the Leopards only one multiple tournament games in the same year once. The 2000 squad edged out victories over Canton South and Orrville, before falling to Triway 46-45. Even the undefeated 20-0 team of 2000-01 was ousted in the second round on a heart-breaking loss to Canton Central Catholic 49-47.
The Leopards enter Division I play against the Boardman Spartans of the Federal League. The Division I Canton District tournament has been split into two locations thanks to the DI arrivals like the Leopards and thus Alliance is the site of Louisville’s first Division I playoff game.
The Spartans finished the year 3-17, including 1-11 in the Federal League. The Leopards and Spartans only common opponent was Lake. Louisville just recently lost to the Blue Streaks 46-39, while Boardman lost to them twice earlier this year by counts of 50-36 and 60-43.
Louisville and Boardman have not played each other since they were both in the Tri-County league during the 1950-51 season. The Spartans won that affair 78-44 and lead the all-time series 13-6.
Below is a look at the all-time series between Louisville and Boardman as well as a look at the last 50 years of tournament basketball. Some information missing from the chart, but these are our known records. We also have tourney records prior to 1962, but much of it is still being discovered.
