Louisville 11, Northwest 5

The #2 Seed Louisville Leopards Baseball Team defeated the visiting #7 Seed Northwest Indians 11-5 in their DII Akron Sectional Final Tournament Game Wednesday Evening at the Field of Dreams. With the victory, Louisville improves to 19-7 overall and advances to play the #6 Seed Norton Panthers in the District Semifinals at Canal Park on Tuesday, May 15 at 7:00 PM.

The Indians took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Leopards answered by batting around and scoring 5 in the first to take control of the contest. Bryce Zuppe singled and advanced to third on an outfield error. Then Cam King reached on an error scoring Zuppe to knot the game at 1-1. After an out, Caleb Prasco ripped an RBI double to left to give Louisville what would be their first and final lead of the contest.

A few batters later, Jack Davis tripled down the right field line scoring both Prasco and Cam Lingle in the process. He would then score on a wild pitch to put the Leopards ahead 5-1 at the end of the first inning.

Northwest would inch back into the game and cut the Louisville lead in half at 6-3 midway through the third inning. However, the Leopards would score 1 in the third and plated 4 in the fourth to all but put away the contest. Dillon Rebuck cracked an RBI triple on a deep fly ball to center scoring Prasco to make it 8-3. He then came home three batters later when Dillon English hit a long sacrifice fly to center to make it 9-3. Zuppe continued the trend with a 2-run triple to center scoring Cam Lingle and Jack Davis to light up the tens digit on the scoreboard as Louisville ripped open an 11-3 lead.

Zuppe would finish 3-for-5 at the plate and also scored 2 runs. Prasco also went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and Jackson Kandel batted 2-for-4 at the dish. The Leopards edged the Indians 11-10 in hits for the contest, but finished with 6 extra base hits compared to Northwest’s lone double by Cory Burroughs in the third.

On the mound, Jordan Shearer started and stayed unbeaten moving to 6-0 on the season. The ace pitched 5 innings, gave up 5 runs on 9 hits, and struck out 5. Zuppe worked a scoreless sixth and a scoreless seventh in surrendering only 1 hit in the process.

Northwest (12-10) was led by Jared Szekely who batted 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Burroughs also finished 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, Canyon Foster scored twice, and Quaid Gatewood knocked home a run as well.
