The two teams lit up the scoreboard in the first quarter with a combined 37 points as the Dukes took a 21-18 lead at the end of eight minutes. The second quarter was much different as both teams struggled to hit their mark with only 5 points between them in the period. That sent the two teams into the locker room tied at 22-22.

The Leopards defense actually held Marlington scoreless from the field over a 13:33 span across three different quarters The Dukes Robin Campbell scored on a short jumper just outside the lane with 53 seconds left in the first quarter. Marlington would fail to score from the floor again until 3:20 left in the third quarter when Campbell scored the Dukes only field goal of the third quarter. In the final quarter, Israel hooked in a shot from the lane to give Louisville a 35-33 lead with 7:33 to go in the contest. That would end up being the Leopards final made field goal of the game.

Meanwhile, the Dukes managed to hit 5 shots in the final period. Campbell scored 11 of her game-high 23 points during the first 6 minutes of the fourth quarter to help Marlington gain a 45-42 advantage with 2:27 left to play.

With both teams in the double bonus at that juncture of the game, the Lady Leopards capitalized on the opportunity. Both Cassidy Kiko and Lautzenheiser hit home a pair of free throws from the line to give Louisville a 46-45 advantage with 92 seconds remaining. In between the two pairs of free throw attempts, a block by Kayla Gibson on the defensive end helped give LHS the chance to go ahead.

The Dukes wasted no time in executing a play out of their own timeout. Bree Hoopes drove hard through a crowd of Leopard defenders before laying it in with the left hand to give Marlington a 47-46 edge with a minute left in the game.

Louisville’s next possession ended with a travel and Hoopes hit two free throws on the other end to put the Dukes up 49-46 with 38.9 seconds to work with. The Leopards offense patiently looked for an open shot on their final possession, but the Marlington defense allowed no such opportunity. Louisville’s only shot missed everything and Campbell corralled the ball to preserve Marlington’s first victory at LHS since 2009.

Campbell tallied 7 rebounds and 3 assists to go with her game-high 23-point night. Hoopes also scored 13 points and Alivia Lepley recored 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. The Dukes improve to 13-4 overall and 8-3 in the NBC with the victory.

This is Marlington’s first victory at Louisville since a 67-56 win on February 16, 2009. The Leopards had won their previous 8 meetings at home in-between. Louisville still dominates the head-to-head series 66-19 with a 31-11 mark at LHS in the series. Despite the season sweep, the Leopards are 15-3 against the Dukes this decade and finish 48-10 against Marlington in NBC games since the league began in 1989-90.
