Louisville 42, Marlington 14

After spotting the Dukes an 8-0 lead, the Leopards scored 42 unanswered points during a 42-14 victory over visiting Marlington in the NBC opener on September 25, 1992. Quarterback Jon Aljancic led Louisville by completing 8 of 16 passes for 180 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air. Aljancic also scored a defensive touchdown, ran in a two-point try, and kicked 4 extra points.

In front of a crowd of 5,000 at Louisville Stadium, it was Marlington who got on the board first. A methodic 12 play, 62 yard drive ended when Quarterback Marcus Coldsnow hit Andy Wolpert for a 1 yard touchdown strike. On the following play, it was Dion Deprill who ran in the two-point conversion to put the Dukes up 8-0.

However, the DII ninth ranked Leopards roared back in the second quarter with two touchdowns of their own. Aljancic hooked up with Bob Beatty's Sports Spring Sports 2013Burick from 16 yards out for the first score and then fired a 24 yard pass to Jason Dossi for the second score. “We were pretty conservative in our first game, because it was my first start,” Aljancic said following the contest. “Week by week, we’ve opened up the offense. I’m happy about it, we have a lot of firepower out there.”

But it wasn’t just Aljancic’s offense that got the Leopards on the board. In the third quarter, the Dukes ran a play that involved a lateral on the far right side. The pitch was juggled and picked out of the air by Aljancic who galloped 40 yards down the left sideline for the easy score. 21-8 Louisville led.

Brian Beatty added two more touchdowns to put the Leps up 35-8 midway through the fourth quarter. Beatty’s first score came on a 37 yard touchdown run and he followed that up with an 85 yard touchdown reception.

With under a minute to play, everything continued to bounce the Leopards way. Louisville fumbled the football as they were about to punch in another score, but lineman Tim Williams recovered the fumble in the endzone for another Leopards touchdown.

The Dukes Andy Bugara returned the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown, but it was too little too late for Marlington. Four turnovers by the Dukes had cost them any chance of an upset as they fell 42-14 to the host Leopards. Louisville improved to 4-0 and Marlington fell to 2-2
