Louisville Vs. Chaney 1992 Football Highlights

The Leopards defense forced 7 turnovers and Brian Beatty scored 4 touchdowns to lead the Louisville Leopards to a 34-6 win over the Youngstown Chaney Cowboys at Boardman Spartan Stadium on November 20, 1992. With the victory, Louisville won their first ever Regional Football Championship.

The Leopards first scoring possession was setup when Jon Aljancic recovered a Sylvester Patton fumble deep into Louisville territory. The Leopards drove 83 yards and eventually scored via a 7 yard touchdown run by Beatty to make it 6-0.

The Cowboys answered when Rick Havrilla completed a 27 yard pass to Dwayne Thompson with 40 seconds left before halftime. The two teams would go into the break knotted at 6-6.

Louisville took a 12-6 advantage via a 20 yard touchdown run by Beatty to begin the scoring in the third quarter. Then the Leopards next score was setup by a Bob Burick interception on Beatty's Sports Gear Up For Football Seasonthe Cowboys next drive. Beatty then carried the ball 8 straight times before running into the endzone from one yard out. He also ran in the two-point conversion to put the Leps up 20-6 with 5:27 left in the third quarter.

Chaney looked to grab momentum back when they drove all the way to the Louisville 39 on the next drive. But Aljancic picked off a Cowboy pass on the next play to end the threat and give the ball back to the Leopards early on in the fourth quarter.

Beatty topped off his night with a 34 yard touchdown reception from Aljancic and Ryan Crislip ran in a touchdown from a yard out to put the Leps up by the final of 34-6. Beatty finished the evening with 24 carries for 146 yards and Louisville rushed for 206 yards as a team overall.

The Leopard defense shutdown the Cowboys in the second half in holding them to just 42 yards rushing and allowing just a single completion for 20 yards. Chaney finished the night with 102 yards on the ground as a team led by Patton’s 24 carries for 78 yards.

“Our defense just seemed to be hitting harder tonight,” Aljancic said after the game. “The offense struggled at first, but the defense picked it up a notch the whole night. Even when we were tied 6-6 at halftime, we felt we had out-played them.”
