Louisville Upsets Perry In Inaugural DI Tournament Game

The Louisville Leopards edged the host Perry Panthers 4-3 Tuesday in their Division I Tournament Debut in the Canton Sectional Semifinals. With the victory the Leopards improved to 8-12 and will travel to Jackson to take on the top-seeded Polar Bears Wednesday at 4:30 PM in the DI Canton Sectional Finals.
Alex Hollifield led Louisville by pitching 6 strong innings, throwing 127 pitches, and giving up just 3 runs on 3 hits. All three of Perry’s runs were scored without the ball being hit into play. They came via a walked in run, a wild pitch, and a passed ball.
Offensively the Leopards outhit the Panthers 8-3 in the contest. Jake Adams, Hollifield, and Garrett 
Yoder smacked 2 hits each. Louisville captured an early 2-0 lead in the second inning when Corey Hileman laid down a 2-out bunt single. The ensuing overthrow allowed both Zach Shea and Jake Adams to score on the play.
After Perry matched Louisville’s score in the bottom half of the second, the Leopards recaptured the lead with a 2-run fifth. Yoder singled home the pinch-running Tyler Adams. Then Stephen Kerzan doubled in Yoder to give Louisville a 4-2 advantage.
The Panthers got a run closer in the sixth inning, but Hileman picked up the save in the seventh to seal the deal. Fittingly, it was Hollifield who fielded the tough ground ball at third and threw a final strike to Jake Adams at first to narrowly record the final out of the contest.
UP NEXT: The Leopards will next travel to Jackson to take on the top-seeded Polar Bears in the DI Canton Sectional Finals on Wednesday, May 14 at 4:30 PM.
